I am new to this site, I have been mixing for about 7 years now and I have come to the conclusion that you have to decide what kind of dj you want to be.
option a a mobil dj playing mostly weddings or
option b a club dj
with option b I just had to ask what makes an international dj,?
how do you get booked in multiple countrys around the globe, i know that you need to grow a fan base and be good but after being good and having music before it comes out is a must, (so many people can do this) whats next??
how do you get to that elite status like erick morillo, dany tenaglia, tiesto, david guetta???
do you necesarily have to have a manager or contract with a dj agency and if so how much are you really making? or do you have to work on music production to get noticed?
if any of the talented dj’s on this forum can add some insight I greatly appreciate it.
go listen to laidback luke’s latest mix or his yearmix 2011 and you’ll see an example of this.
i fucking love lukes work, but his last mixtapes were kind of noob
i still enjoyed them, if for not for any other reason than it made me remember im a pretty good dj =p.
but realistically, producing helps, the right friends and contacts helps more. id say if todd zweig was still doing events down in sd to make friends with him. back in the day, that dude knew fuckin everyone.
super nice guy too. i handled all his promotions (north of san diego) for romper room and the playskool parties back in the day.
Don’t be fooled. Production is KING of the current business. If you are just a DJ, you have to be incredibly skilled to make a name for yourself. Production is what people come out to hear, and it just works out that DJing is the medium of choice in introduction to the masses.
It used to be different, but that’s really how I see it these days.
As far as im concerned, or at least in Portugal if you don’t have the right frinds you’re a nowbody. If you produce something then you can be someone. But i prefer enven playing one or twice a year to do it for the fun of it. not for the money or the fame. The love affair with music is much bigger.
