What things should I get as a starting producer?

lol, is that not exactly what I said ?

Jesus Christ. My brains not functioning. I somehow completely read over your bottom sentence. My bad  .

So can someone recommend me a good low price soundcard?
Also when it comes to the Rokit monitors what are the difference in number? (Ex: Rokit 6’s or Rokit 's)
Should I get a good desk early on? How early?
Also what about the Macbook Pro question

Could you elaborate on that… I don’t see how it’ll make a difference, considering I’ll still have the same distance between both speakers and myself making an equal triangle and also having them off the wall… Mine are on stands on my desk right now and moving them (what’ll probably end up being about 20cm to each side) makes me wonder what substantial change it’ll make?

Also ‘serious’ studio? I’m guessing you mean a studio with proper acoustics?

I use a Komplete Audio 6. Bought it cause it does the job well, and is cost effective. I think you can get it now for like $200.

I have Rokit 6’s, but to be honest I produce mainly in headphones. I use the Dre Beats Pro (FUCK off all of you - before it gets started. I like em), and also the AKG K702’s.

To be honest, they’re completely correct. I am actually looking for a desk now as well, it’s highly reccomended to get a desk where you can fit at least a 49key keyboard infront of you and work comfortably. If you don’t have monitor stands, you should definitely get a desk that fits that need as well.

I am planning on getting → (it’s marked down to $230 in store)

And as for MacBook Pro, i’ve never produced on anything except the MacBook Pro (First was the early 2011 version and now it’s the MAcBook Pro Retina 15’). I love it, I have no problems, it’s rare that my CPU gets overloaded, and I always keep everything in MIDI while having the VSTs run as well - so im using a lot of CPU.

Hope this helps.

Do you think my Sol Republic Tracks HD would suffice or should I be intent on getting monitors as well?

LMAO btw thats the same exact desk I was looking at to buy

MacBook Pro tho would you say that the 13" 2.9GHz one is good or should I go for the 15" 2.3GHz

I’ve tried the Sol Republics and frankly I didn’t like them at all. I’d say stay away from them. The thing that most people forget or do not take into account (LanceBlaise did) is that even with monitors acoustic treatment is important until you get used to the sound and understand the sound coming out of your monitors.

As for the MacBook, either will do. I picked the 15" cause at the time the Retina was only available as a 15" and I think it’s important to have a larger screen (well maybe not important, but it makes it WAY easier to work). Now, if you want a 13" for portability and to save you some money, that’s perfectly fine and understandable but I would purchase a monitor (any that’s like at or above 15" will do - pref. larger though) to go along with it. Actually after the desk my next purchase will probably be a 23" monitor to work on. It’s just an easier way to work.

Edit: I also was leaning towards the 15" MBP cause I was at the time DJ’ing with Traktor, and fuck DJ’ing on a 13" screen.

Between the Beats by Dre Mixr and Sol Republics Tracks HD which would you recommend?
Any other headphones that are better that are less than $300?

You in the states? Because a “good desk” can be done for very cheap here… I would say after the soft synths, as that is when you would be collecting gear and actually need some space.

The soundcard / audio interface is how the sound gets from the computer to your monitors. It can also be how you get external sounds like a mic or a Moog Synth (example) into the computer and the DAW…

Yea I’m in the states, I see what you’re sating though about the desks

I wouldn’t recommend buying the beats at full price. I got a discount cause my friends the manager at Bestbuy. Picked up the pro (which retail at $399) for $240. Since you have the Sols which you can DJ with I’d recommend the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO which are under $200, and I’ve heard great things about them (however I haven’t used em).

Are the Sols not good for producing?

AKG K240 MKII Pro, Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro, would be my main 2 preferences.

I meant $200 or less, are there better headphones for producing/djing than th Sol Republic Tracks HD at that price range?

Where are you located? The AKGs aren’t under $200, but the Beyerdynamic’s are.

Chicago, and those are better than Sol Republics for producing/djing?

You can get the 990s for like $150-180 then… and I really can’t say as I have never used Sol Republics, I was merely throwing out another good headphone to try, the Beyerdynamics have an insanely flat frequency range (good for production, of course) and are very, very comfy, having a headphone that can be worn for a long period of time without hurting is always a plus, especially when you’re in the zone

Personally I think the SOL’s are trash :disappointed:. I don’t mean it in a rude way, but that’s how I feel about them. That’s why I was just recommending other cans.

Oh no its not a problem at all, I dont have the Sol’s YET I’m getting them as a bday present from my girlfriend however I’m able to change that around to a different pair of headphones. Would headphones suffice as a substitute for monitors for the time being?

Also I’ve been looking around at MacBook Pros for myself to get around Christmas time and I kinda wanted to ask for help on the specs

Would it be worth it to add the upgrade from 2.3GHz to 2.6GHz for use with production and DJing or is it unnecessary?

Also, would 4GB or RAM suffice or is the upgrade to 8GB of RAM worth it?

Get the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pros. They sound way better than anything else in there price range. Actually the other option would be the Audio Technica M-50’s - a matter of taste and aesthetics really. Go to a store and try them both on. I spent an hour listening to the same 3 tunes on both sets of cans. In fact, the only reason I actually made a decision was because I was going to be late to class hahaha.

Getting street-wear headphones will slow your production down. The DT’s or the M50’s will let you figure out your productions and last you a long time before you get monitors and after.
