hey guys, a quick question, as the title suggests, whats the longest length rca/phonos i can use?
im playing an outdoor event at the end of the month, problem is there will be about 5 m distance between my controller and main mixing desk as theres also a few bands playing, so obviously without having cables like a tightrope ill probably need it to be about 7 metres long!! will this cause me issues??
I was gonna say.. “the thicker the better, but size isn’t the only thing that matters” then go into explaining about the leads and molds and stuff.. but then I realized! lol
I think you might want to be carefull of interference if it is a un balanced lead (rca usually are), you might want to run di box or just maybe keep the power cord away from any power cords and stuff.
If you are running it into a mixer you should use 1/4 inch cables/ instrument cables.
You could also use a noise filter right at the en of the cable closest to the mixing desk,

thanks guys, since you mentioned di box, ive had a look and im not going to lie but ive never seen or used one of these,
heres one i found, am i looking at the right thing:
so looking at it, without sounding dumb, my controller has rca’s on the back, so 2x rca to 1/4in then 2x xlr cables this was using chan 1 & 2 on the di??
damn tootin 7 metres is far the only time id even consider running even that far is to the bar lol, but back to the subject would the behringer di box be suitable for converting rca to xlr? if so ill order one now
am i missing something.. isn’t 7 meters < 25 feet?
My deck is over 30 and I could easily imagine running RCAs from one end to the other without a problem..
..surround sound/home theater systems need more than that, and they are unbalanced and are usually extremely small cables.. no issues!
no. i would take that wager for large amounts of money. you shouldnt be concerned about running long lengths of unbalanced line level cable until 75-100 feet.
Well when i was at a house party and i hooked up my speakers outside with rcas the sound had heaps of noise, and then the next tie at the same house with the same speakers used a di and the sound was good. Look you if the sound desk has rca inputs then use rca but i would recommend from personal experiences that anything over 5 meters you would want a balanced signal or a nice thick gauge rca wire, but i would go with the di.
its an outdoor event…there will be power running everywhere for the bands, possibly from different generators so phasing might be fucked up…lighting rig interference to compete with…so use BALANCED CONNECTIONS! Its a no brainer IMO
