What's your story?

What’s your story?

Tell us all How you got into Djing.

the bitches.

oh yeah, and the free coke.

I discovered that music was the only thing that has made me happy my entire life…so…i spend every day learning how to create it and manipulate it

Boom!

Listening to digitally imported for too long and wondering how it was done… Kinda learned how and got addicted

Nice one!

How I got into It is watching my big brother doing it all the time I just really wanted to start so I got my first controller…

A very small piece of paper…

…a trip down a rabbit hole…

…some incredible tunes, and more than a few pretty things to look at along the way…

…personal discovery…

…resolute life decision.

I feel lucky to have finally found my place in this world.

The end.

I’m too fucking talentless to play bass.

jk. no one’s too talentless to play bass.

A family friend DJ’s, admired him, tried CD players, hated them for a lack of flexibility, found DJTT, since I’m a Computer Science major I loved it, and began DJing thanks to Ean. Yay?

I like EDM and when I’m at parties, I always find myself messing with the ipod so I thought “why not buy a cheap controller and give it a shot” and so I did.

So do they have a machine by the booth that’s just press a button and out pops a coke or do they give you a bunch of change before the gig?

caught onto dance music in the late 90s when it was at the height of it’s mainstream popularity, wasn’t much older than 12 - i’ve been hooked ever since.
i suppose getting into djing was just a natural evolution of my obsession with the music and culture. there were a couple of catalysts along the way ofcourse, but without a doubt the major one was the release of Traktor3 in 05-06.

I was the go to guy at the record shop. The local club needed a DJ to cover one night and asked me to do it. Before long I was the only one, probably because of my work ethic and the fact that I did other stuff with lights and stuff Plus I’m a pretty good general handy man. Then I got burned out and quit, now I’m back and having fun with no pressure.

Eh uncle has a DJ agency wedding/ party/ club DJs. He needed a DJ i needed money. Simple as. Whacked away as a mobile DJ for two years. Now iv decided id like to do more mixing and less MIC work as i find the art of mixing intriguing getting better now and have done a number of club gigs still dabble in the mobile side of things as the money is generally better.

now this is a story of how my live was changed
and i would hope you dont TL;DR, becasue i would like to tell you about how i became like dj 5 dolla holla

well. i was born and raised here, right
and i spent A LOT of time at our local play area
we would chill, relax
spin some wax just out side the school
when a couple of djs were up to no good
started making trouble in my neighborhood
i got in one little fight and my mom got scared
she said your moving
in with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air

I begged and pleaded with her day after day
But she packed my suite case and send me on my way
She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket.
I put my walkman on and said, ‘I might as well kick it’.

First class, yo this is bad
Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass.
Is this what the people of Bel-Air Living like?
Hmmmmm this might be alright.

i whisted for a cab and when it came near
the license plate said fresh
and had dice in the mirror
if anything i could say that this cab was rare
but i thought nah, forget it
yo home to bel-air!

i-pulled- up to a house about seven or eight
i yelled to the cabbie yo home, smell you later
looked at my kingdom i was finally there
to sit on my throne as the prince of bel-air

*edited to include the extended lyrics

beat street came out, i started breaking. our neighborhood crew needed a dj.

the end.

Can’t be a promoter anymore so it fills the void.

…pfft, cool story bro.

Love the music but hate the ‘scene’ (drugs, kids, crowds etc.), so I started doing it for myself, which became mates, private functions, bars and now the odd gig. That, and the cost of expensive EDM compilations in South Africa where half of the CD is actually drivel.
