Who scratches here?

Its a fair bit in before he starts in anger but its all awesome to watch…

He was quite famous in his time in the early 90’s, a couple of hardcore anthems he wrote / produced charted quite well..

Christ , im getting old :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit: if it aint your thing, fast forward to 51 minutes in… Then it gets really mental

basicly 2 & 3 click flares are childs play compared to the skill required to perform 1 clicks at double the speed of the song, because you can pull those off as soon as you get normal time 1 clicks down. The problem is that you can make a similar sound and speed using not much effort twiddling your fingers on the crossfader, but it never sounds as pronounced as 1 clicks. And once you get the action down you will be much better at making your hand do what you want it to do, so you can take on more difficult techniques.

This is EXACTLY where I am at and I am struggling to get out of that hole. My biggest issue that most of the tutorials show the 1 click flare on it’s own but how to you transition into from another scratch? I find I almost have to stop, reset my brain and start them (badly).

think DJ angelo does something with a 1click into another scratch.
Check out his youtube videos.

The Midlands Superstar’s YT channel was my first port of call when I started learning all of this. I think he is one of the best instructors out there. BTW have you seen his reloop promo routine? What I need is a scratch that then goes into the 1 click. I’ll figure my way out of the other end later

I will try and get a video done over Christmas and post it on this thread.

This is great! This chap certainly has is process down! I liked the additional slipmat for mixing then using just the butter rugs for the scratching. It was also nice to see some gold fashioned hardcore and hardcore mixing techniques. I am thinking we might be equally as ancient too!

One of the challenges for me is that I now have two (currently) separated disciplines. What I am learning to scratch to (slower hip hop beats and minimal breakbeats) is not what I mix (d&b and minimal techno). It will be interesting to see where I end up when I start trying to merge them.

^^^ After seeing the standard of the guys i hang out with, can you now see why i don’t bother trying to scratch?
To say i’d be hopelessly outclassed is an understatement

Anyway, i can hold my beer miles better then him… so Ner ner…
( We have photographic evidence)

The genre isn’t so much my cuppa anymore, but this guy has nice cutting skills, and I don’t mean just the scratching. Send/return FX are a nice added touch.

@Smittttttttten :
I’ve posted this a few times already, but here it is again - if you wonder how you can scratch to minimal techno. Not mindblowing but a good starting point if you feel comfy enough. Lots of beat juggling and mildly spicy TM scratching.

“Spicy” is a registered trademark of the Shiftee School of Scratch.

" but this guy has nice cutting skills, and I don’t mean just the scratching. Send/return FX are a nice added touch."

That’s the next big area where he wants to up his game, but using hardware effects rather then software…

Ah, right. I was wondering what external FX unit he was using, then noticed him nudging a mouse every now and then… guess the unit is a computer with a screensaver enabled

No, it really was hardware  He was on an internet radio station shoutbox a the time, ill ask him what exactly he was using when i next see him

Edit: i just played a bit of this video again here and the wife shouted from the other side of the room… “Is this Monty?” lol she knows us too well

It just takes practice to be able to do it in the moment. The way I was able to get faster is just do it on beat starting at 90bpm doing that until I had it down, that took about 2 weeks practice, then moving up 10bpm, when I had that speed down keep moving, it took about two days to get to 150bpm, but above that was a lot more difficult and I couldn’t put a timeframe on it, but at that stage I didn’t do it solid like when I was learning at the start. but it is very frustrating not being able to do it, they key is always perseverance pays off and the hand movements will no longer be forced.

The good thing about flares is you can do them from behind or infront of the sample, so practice doing them forwards and in reverse, The technique is a little harder on the breain to start in reverse, but not too difficult to master.

Good luck

So here’s the next question for all you wonderful people on this thread. Are any of you guys up for posting practice videos in order to get feedback from the rest of the thread members? Obviously there is more value in this for the less expert members. I am more than happy to go first…

This could be fun.

count me in; as you know I have no problem embarrassing myself. I dunno if anyone will learn anything from watching that though but it might force me to practice more often.

Ok, here is a very much warts and all practice video I just did. Don’t worry, I can take it

I practise on my cdj 800’s

I used to play bass, so my right hand is solid for using the fader…but the only thing is my rhythm is better in my right hand too.. so I would rather have that one on the record.

I practise doing baby scratches with like fwd, back, back or fwd, fwd, back. On the fader had I am just trying to crab I guess. Not really specific technique, but just getting my motor skills up I guess.

I also practise starting with the fader closed and do closed-open-closed, and the opposite, open-closed-open. Which may or may not be components to flares and chirps?

maybe someone who is more experienced could analysis what i just said and give so suggestions to help me grow.

When I get my turntables on the go, I wanna practice old school beat juggling. I feel like having those skills along with scratching adds a layer to your mixing skills and timing

I REALLY MISS DJFORUMS SCRATCH TUTORIALS!!!

Here’s my first soundcloud post ever. Feel free to critique. Would love to hear some feedback. The very last minute or so is not me.

Will post a vid, when I get a chance. This by far one of the best threads Smittten.

I’ve been scratching for about 2 years now. I haven’t really taken it too serious as i’m a busy college student. I’ll try to get a video or soundcloud post up soon. Just ordered traktor so that will help out a lot.

Right now i’m not really focusing on a new scratch, just trying to perfect the ones i’ve learned so far (1 click flares, original flares, 2 click flares, chirps, babies, stabs, crabs, etc). In the next coming months i’ll probably start to focus on more advanced flare patterns such as the aquaman scratch and swing flares.

One thing i’ve learned about scratching is that there are some patterns that on paper looks so easy, but are so frustrating to learn.

So who here scratches? Me!
Are you beginner or Grandmaster? Somewhere in the middle.
What are you learning right now? Prizm
What’s been the hardest technique for you to learn? Tazer
How did you or do you learn? Youtube.
What’s your setup? 3 1200s and a PMC 05 Pro and PMC 06 Pro
What do you scratch to? Lots of beat4battle beats.
Would you like to go to dinner? Sure!
