Who scratches here?

So who here scratches?
Just started learning so I annoy myself a great bit
Are you beginner or Grandmaster?
What comes before “beginner?”
What are you learning right now?
The very basics
What’s been the hardest technique for you to learn?
Not a technique, but find it hard to not slip into my natural rhythm instead of actually performing the same scratch over and over
How did you or do you learn?
djAngelo’s vids are favorited on my youtube and lots of old VHS of the invisible scratch pickles
What’s your setup?
2x 1200’s, Vestex PMC-05, Pioneer DJM 500, TSP, Kontrol X1, 2x Dicer, 2x M44-7, Sony MDR-v700
What do you scratch to?
looped beats around 80 BPM for now. would love to scratch over my ghettofunk someday
Would you like to go to dinner?
I like turtles

Another question - are you guys trying to master inidividual scratches or are you just trying stuff out? I find myself doing a bit of both. My brain does not seem to be able to cope with actively executing the 1 click flare but if I just use the force, it seems to come…

And this is where i’m SCREWED! The only scratch I know the name of: The crab. All the rest of them, I just, kinda, do. Like they just happen. I don’t know what they’re called, so I haven’t looked up ANY of the how-to vids for them…
It’s a real problem.

I do a bit of both.

I look through youtube videos to learn new scratches, but i find myself just sort of freestyling and experimenting a lot as well. I think too many people make the mistake of just trying to learn one scratch after the next. It’s important to try to develop your own individuality and style.

I used to just “try stuff out”, but I realized I wasn’t really happy with my scratching technique, so now I’ve gone back to the basics, practicing forward scratches, chops and stabs, mainly trying to use my crossfader hand in a way that I think will be more useful for advanced scratches.

Scratching is like Kung Fu…or any other martial art.

Its practice.

You need to practice each scratch until it is easy and you can do it on cue.

Then you start putting em together.

I would say I am just after beginner…but not very far.

wow if hipnopath’s “somewhere in the middle” I an uber noob and need to practice some more

I do some basic scratches like chirps and transform. Nothing really special and I don’t normally do it during my sets. I just scratch for fun.

I must have missed this when I was checking replies on my iphone. This is impressive.

Come on ppl - don’t be shy, let get some practice vids up there. The Professor and I have already opened our Kimonos for you all!

I’ll try to get a video up by this weekend. My decks are sitting down in Eugene (University of Oregon) and i have been on break for the past 3 weeks. I’ll be getting back tomorrow but I’ll need to get some practice in and then i’ll try to record something.

Actually tightened up my (tension adjustable) crossfader yesterday, made it feel a lot more smooth than before. Nice!

Well, this is shortly after I got my TSP2 upgrade and got my APC80 running well.

I had just started scratching…so forgive me. Its the stock standard XFader in the APC with a slight tweak in the mapping to get it to be more responsive.

Ooooosh, i hope you dont mind, but i’m gonna share that APC 80 vid on Basefook!

15 dollars little man…put that shit in my hand…

Sure mate, go buck wild! Just mention me then yeah? Link or something like that.

Here is another one of the APC80. My mate is just pressing buttons (he does not really know whats happening there) and I was recording!

DAMN! 8500 views!
Its only 15 sec long!

WOOT!

This one is of the APC80 (before it was joined), but you don’t see MUCH of it.
Just tossing it in there…shamlessly.

Sweet

So who here scratches?

dee jae snafu

Are you beginner or Grandmaster?

im a 9th degree white belt

What are you learning right now?

moar record hand control ftw working on smooth and wavy tears.

What’s been the hardest technique for you to learn?

flares took a while.. the trick for me was to uber slow them down until i was literally doing each part and stopping between : start fader open- push record half way thru sound-stop-click-stop-push record the rest of the way thru the sound-stop-rewind halfway-stop-click-rewind the rest of the sound-stop… repeat

i did this for a few days for hours each day until i could slowly build speed while keeping them on beat. altho at first i did them with no other sound or music playing, then when i got the mechanics down , i added a beat and learned to do them in time.

after this i applied this technique to other scratches i wanted to learn.

How did you or do you learn?

slow things down. also try practicing in a dark room with the lights off, it really helps me focus on the sound, which helps you get the mechanics better, because your building muscle memory when you scratch, which means the more you practice sloppy, the more you stay and develop sloppy. so when you practice make sure youre staying on point, when it all starts to feel and sound the same i stop, and give myself time to refresh.
