Is it really that big of deal? There's a show about DJing, don't watch it if its not your thing...watch it if it is.
Make fun of it, if you will, but I think its silly that some of you feel threatened by it.

nope.
This is the sentiment I don't get.
What's wrong with weekend hobbies?
Why does it give a bad name for "everyone out there"?
I'm pretty sure I'm allowed to employ critical thinking regardless of whether this show makes it to tv or not. Same goes for everyone else in the world.
And last, but certainly not least, why has it got anything to do with your passion and artistic expression? That's like saying I can no longer enjoy a nice meal, because somebody decided to eat the same dish in a way that I personally don't agree with.
Put a different way, if you'd started dj'ing after, instead of before this show was made, is your passion (and legitimacy as someone who enjoys dj'ing) in some way compromised?
Makes no sense is all I'm sayin'. Life is a rich tapestry.

If it is like the singing version, then each contestant will probably get 5 minutes or so to perform. This limits the possibility of who could perform to controllerists, turntablists or mashup artists
Uh, the show isn't even out yet so how is it doing that?
And most people are passionate about their weekend hobbies. Wether it's motorcross, gardening, or music there will always be amateurs and professionals. Doesn't mean the amateurs (like me) can't enjoy it too.
About the girl in the video..... She's young and excited about DJing and wanted to share it with others. Why put her down? Does it make you feel better about yourself? I agree she shouldn't have made or posted the video, but the DJTT community should be more supportive of newbies. IMO. Everyone was a newbie at one time.
On the Simon Cowell show...... Mr. Cowell has found and showcased many talented unknowns in his programs that would probably never have been heard by the public had it not been for the tv show. How is this a bad thing? Even if the show isn't good, the cream always rises to the top. All I see is folks posting opinions and speculation on a show that doesn't exist yet, and the effects of that non-existent show.
I wish I could see into the future like some of you can.![]()

Hmm probably shouldn't have given that thread a similar title as it has nothing to do with the show
More to do with how awful this girls djing tut is

This and this...
It's just a tv show, I don't see how it will harm anything. American Voice Factor Idol hasn't done much to harm the record industry other than adding a couple of crap pop albums to the mix.
I'll be completely honest, DJing is a weekend hobby for me.
I'm happy people here are passionate about it...If I didn't have a career making decent money and working 40+ hours a week, maybe I would get a chance to practice more or even play out at a club. That doesn't mean I'm not passionate about the hobby.
I'm passionate about music - I've wanted to do this for the past 20 years but never had the chance. Now I have a job that pays the bills and I can afford the toys. I'm not competing with any of you, I'm just screwing around in my free time and I enjoy that. Why is that a bad thing? Why does that give a bad name to "djing?"
As for the video of the girl, yes I will laugh at that, its funny. I'm not disrespecting her by doing so. If she enjoys what she's doing, she'll practice and get better...and I'm sure she'll laugh at herself one day too.
nope.
So yesterday at work while I was on break I find out that Simon Cowell and Will Smith have announced that they are creating a version of X-Factor just for DJs. This is pretty much going to be like X-Factor, there will be judges and each week people will get elliminated. One thing sticks in my mind though, is this bringing the right attention to DJing? Will this make DJing another regular act at talent shows? Who will the judges be?
First thing is this producers of this shows. Will Smith and Simon Cowell?! C'mon, that's like when Ellen DeGeneres was judging American Idol. She can't sing and she doesn't know anything about music theory or anything like that. Will Smith isn't a DJ, and neither is Simon Cowell. But Jazzy Jeff, who would appear on Fresh Prince of Bel air from time to time as Will's friend Jazz, is a DJ. That is the only relationship Will has with DJing. Will can beatbox like a beast, but haven't seen him DJ. And I know Simon Cowell is not a DJ. This has Will's name all over it.
I can see the vision in their concept though. Recently, people like Nicky Minaj, Rihanna, and Akon have been experimenting with house by teaming up with DJs. First track I heard like it was David Guetta and Akon's Sexy Bitch. That house influences all over that track. The four-on-the-floor beat, the light synths in the background, and more. People are pulling away from Hip-Hop and Rap a little bit because it's all we hear on the radio now. We needed some upbeat positive dancible music. It's different and it's working so far. I noticed whenever someone does a house music and mainstream tag team, that song is on the top 10 on iTunes. I love how this music we have been hiding in clubs is finally coming into mainstream.
Another thing I love about this concept is the fact that we finally have a form of talent we regularly don't see in talent shows. How many times have we seen someone on a talent show scratching on turntables? Zero. How many times have we seen someone try to sing, rap, dance, play an instrument, do magic, or do something weird and unnecessary? Not zero. What's the remainder of this equation? Us DJs. Talent shows usually don't bother with us because of the setup time and a table of turntables being in the way of little lisa's poorly cordinated dance. So now we finally have our outlet of competition we don't have to wait until we get a record deal to get.
Because of this being on DJTT, you guys obviously know there is more than one way to DJ. There will be people who use turntables, controllers, or both. This show needs to support both formats of DJing if Simon wants to make the show to last. And the rules need to be as flexible as possible, otherwise no one will do it.
One thing tells me that there will be negatives though. One concern of mine is that maybe after the first season is over, people will start DJing for the wrong reasons. I was in the gym one day talking to this guy and I mentioned that I was a DJ. Apparently, chicks are into that stuff. I'm afraid that people will start DJing for that reason along. There are posers out there that will go to desperate lengths to get noticed by chicks. Don't even bother trying it if you are doing it for this reason alone. If you are going to DJ, do for your love of music, not for your love of making love.
Obviously because of it being a talent show there will be judges. For the judges there are a few I would love to see. The few I think would be good choices are DJTT very own Ean Golden, DJ Shiftee, Q-Bert, deadmau5, and Skrillex. Why those choices? I have given a mini-documentary with factors why for each.
1) The Jesus Christ look-a-like Ean Golden knows how to create his mixes using genres of music we never thought of using. I even find myself calling him the MacGyver of DJs or Jesus Christ(common nickname in the DJTT community.) If you have seen some of Ean's tutorials and performances, he brings common genres like House, Dubstep and Hip-Hop, and mixes it with something unexpected like Rock, Metal, or Classical. He has done a few videos for Native Instruments demonstrating the power of Traktor, his DJ software of choice. Some of his most popular are his "Depeche Mode Remix with Kontrol S2" and "Phenomena," which is the most viewed video on the Native Instruments YouTube page.
His most famous accomplishment got the attention of DJs worldwide. Ean took a VCI-100, an DJ Controller by Vestax, and did a video on how to replace some the pads with arcade buttons. Shortly after the video he left Remix Mag and started his own business from his apartment as a DJ Shop/DJ news site called DJ Tech Tools. Ean and a group of employees started selling arcade buttons, colored knob packs, filmware updates, overlays, and a free mapping to create the ultimate controller. This was to turn an old VCI-100 into a VCI-100 Special Edition and Arcade Edition controllers. After a while DJTT started selling premade VCI-100SE and Arcade Edition Controllers. Right after these controllers were released they were sold out within 2 hours.
Ean then took the idea of arcade buttons and controllerism further by make an original DJ controller called the Midi Fighter. Midi fighter inspired by the MPC series and was designed to control decks of DJ software without jog wheels, faders or knobs. Just you and square shaped controller with 16 arcade buttons with custom color buttons, plates, and optional cases. He took the midi fighter to even bigger heights with the Midi Fighter pro series, four models of midi fighters with knobs and, on some, faders.
He could be a judge of the "show" if he wasn't so busy with the shop and other projects. Ean does shows on a very limited basis each year. And by limited, I mean from one to five shows per month. So the show might squeeze only one guest spot out of him unless he has more workers at DJTT than we all think.
2) DJ Shiftee is could be a contender in my opinion because of a few factors. One being he held the title as World DMC Champion back in 2009, along with other titles and awards from DMC(Disco Mix Club.) Now you know DMC doesn't just give them out unless you had some major skill under your belt. He is also has a title as an instructor at Dubspot, a world famous school for teaching DJing and Production. Those two factors alone can show you that this guy know proper techniques in DJing from the basic to advanced. So I can probably see him be a judge on this show if the project goes though.
3) Another choice is can definatly see is DJ Q-Bert. If it sounds familiar you have either seen him on YouTube or as a playable character on DJ Hero 2 or seeing him scratching in Tony Hawk's Underground while you're doing kick flips. If you only know him from you playing him scratching to Rihanna and deadmau5, watch a video of him and see how this dude scratches. Pretty beastly huh? Well the dude has been scratching records since he was 15 and he has gathered up DMC bragging rights since the early 90s. Some these bragging rights include DMC World Champ three times and a few US DMC Champ titles. At age 41, this dude still got the skill and experience to judge.
4) To me deadmau5 is kinda iffy, but I can see him on the show at some point. The professional griefer mentioned in a few tweets today about the idea of the show. Joel even posted a 12 paragraph article about the project on Facebook and Twitter. He says in the article/college essay (from a mouth of a sailor) that he loves the concept of it and how it might bring more interests into electronic music. He did mention being a judge though in a tweet a few hours ago. He said he wouldn't judge a competition like this unless it was original production, remixes or the like. Seeing this idk if he was offered a spot to judge or not, but he said he loves the idea for it.
Deadmau5 has experience with multiple genres in the EDM scene including some attributes of rock, gospel, and some hip-hop in some of his songs. In my opinion, I would love to see the Haterbot 6000 judge even if it was a guest spot. Who knows. The troll may even wear his signature mau5head. It may only be for one episode though if he desides to do one. He does have a record label(Mau5trap) and his new album scheduled to drop this year(announced by the trollmaster himself via ustream.)
5) Skrillex is another one I would love to see probably because of his history with multiple genres. He was the guitarist, and later singer, in a screamo, emo-type band called From First to Last back back in 2004(under his birth name Sonny Moore.) Only after leaving in 2007 due to issues with his voice did he focus on his solo career in Dubstep and glitch music. Now the kid is performing sold-out shows with his signature screaming bassline shooting into the ears of millions of fans. His resume in the music field is pretty broad considering the kid is only 23-years old. He career in music started when he was around 15-16. The Dudes has enough experience to run his own record label. In fact, he runs his own record label called OWSLA Records which signed acts like Porter Robinson and Zedd.
We started hearing about Skrillex after Deadmau5 signed the dude to Mau5trap Sonney is a lot like deadmau5 more ways than one. Instances like interests in music, millions of fans, have a cigarette in their hand everytime you see them. Along with that, he also dropped his own record label like Joel did. Which means That means Sonney was pretty busy last year and 2012 may be no different. He might only be for one episode if he did it and it would probably be as a Celebrity Judge. He has a record label, a new EP that dropped last year in 2011 after Xmas, and making more music for us to enjoy.
And that's how you make a tv show for DJs that people will love. Your welcome DJTT.
I'd watch it for the auditions... can just see the guy rolling in with his iPhone and idj that he's had for a week, or the kid with his laptop going outta sync ,"that never happened before, let me try that again".... the Tiesto wannabe who only manages gets 30 seconds into the intro of a track with a jesus pose, white gloves and glowsticks....
Gah the fun of it :P ..
Apart from that though I don't think i'll be bothered watching :P .. its going to be Production / Controllerist / scratch DJ based show, which rules out many music styles which depend on a DJ building up a crowd (house, techno, trance, etc) .. theres only going to be 3 mins, half the intro's and breakdowns are that long alone (and yes are required IMHO.. thats the point of the track) :P
Whatever about Will Smith knowing anything about DJ'ing, I'm sure he's been around DJ's and certainly worked with them long enough to know whats what, who's good and who's bad, and wouldn't surprise me if he did actually play a bit as well.
