....oh and in my opinion to the title of the thread.

I'd say 100% Turntables get more respect

Amen... as much as I love ushering in the new age and all, I still lose it every time I see Andy C working his magic.

Guess its kind of senseless to argue as only time will tell, but I'm seeing quite a distant future for clubs to abandon standard in-house setups entirely. A couple grand up front investment is peanuts for how much the gear pays out over the years its used.
o_O I'm pretty sure Technics _still_ haven't been replaced by another standard. An additional standard (CDJ-1K's) doesn't necessarily mean losing an old one.

What I think is likely, assuming there is no adopted standard for controllers, is that clubs will start having some kind of switched patch panel in the booth, to ensure smoother changeovers and easier non-standard setup for all.

The whole idea of having a standard controller is retarded, it's taking the biggest advantage a controller set up has (customisation and flexibility) and throwing it out the window.

I understand beat matching is one of the basic skills that a DJ should master and I figure there are intricacies between one mixer to mixer, vinyl to cdj or even cdj to cdj, but cant it be learned on any platform with a platter? even a S4?

Vinyl's just harder and more fun :P

Sure an s4 works. Just make sure you turn off those bpm readouts and the phase meter!

It shouldn't matter what you use. Everything has its own intricacies and I don't think a guy who shows up with a mixer and a pair of technics is any better than a guy who shows up with a pair of cdjs or a guy with his VCI-100.

Hehe, can't stop progress. Or actually the business models of DJ manufacturers who want to sell more gear.

Going back to this talk about beat matching; as I said in another thread, it reminds me of software engineering reviews where the question of how to make a linked list is asked. In real life few need to write linked list implementations today, it's mostly to make sure someone knows the issues with data structures and pointers.

Same with beat matching, it's a good litmus test to know if someone knows the basics behind DJ:ing but in real life, or, the audience, they don't really care how it was done.

^ yeah but that's not the point. It's like beatmatching on a controller or on turntables. There is an enjoyment, an interaction with the music and equipment that does not happen when using a VCI-100 or a MidiFighter. Sort of like driving an automatic car or a manual.

I find the interaction of having to move a slider, match tempos, drop a track in time, knudge it, etc. I find that much more enjoyable than pressing a button. It's also harder and that's why TT's get the respect they do.
