Some people might prefer not to gig where their gear isn't welcome, others might wanna keep the job. Rather simple choice actually.
True. But I think this will change, there was this same complaining left and rich when CDJs arrived and people tried to put them next to Technics, or even when more complex DJ mixers arrived. Same story again, things will change.

I just think it's funny, as a musician, to see this happening. With music gigs no bar owner will stop the band from playing if they take down the bar drum set, exactly. And we always are running out of space on smaller places, that's for sure but there are ways to get the job done without complaints from either the DJs or the owners. Flexibility.

... I still think that when the Technics and CDJs stop working, more and more club owners will just not replace them. Cheaper.

Oh yes, the good old CDJ bashing years. BPM counters were considered cheating back then. Fun times
Yeah, things will change, and I personally think they already have quite a bit. For a while though, there will be those places that go the oldschool route. Can't hurt to be able to cope with that.

ah yep.... i remember when a friend of mine got a mixer that showed the approx bpm's and i thought he was cheating

for now in any case i agree that someone who wants to dj in clubs etc should at least be able to beatmatch etc and be able to use whatever gear the club has in case it's just not feasible to rewire stuff and use a laptop and controller.

things will change over time of course i'm sure... but that seems to be the situation for the time being.

Yeah I agree but this thread is about respect, not the result of his performances.

That's like saying people getting into computers now should learn how to work on old technology first, then start working on the new stuff that's used now.

    Doesn't make much sense.

not that i'm saying i agree with the comment from @hoodless but your statement actually *would* make sense if the computer company you want to work for was using older technology - so u had to be able to use it to get a job. and that does apply to the dj'ing thing if u want to work in clubs that are using cdj's etc (older technology)

while i think its still a good idea to know how to beatmatch for any dj - doesnt mean that all bedroom dj's need to be able to do it. its a different kettle of fish if we're discussing dj's who want to get paid in clubs ofc.

Agreed. I don't think Picasso would have had much credibility if he didn't know how to paint/draw classically first.

Actually I think that sums it up. I interview people to SW jobs, I don't expect them to know assembly, just to know it's down there somewhere.

Yes, it all depends on the gigs you want to get. Some examples:
    * Bedroom, anything goes.
    * Private gigs, gigs you arrange, anything goes.
    * Smaller clubs, they might hang on to their dear CDJs and small spaces so you need to compromise.
    * Bigger clubs, they are flexible and professional.

As for respect, I respect any DJ who is unique and makes people dance and/or stare and/or listen. DJ Shadow is a good example, I really don't care what equipment he uses, he's just good. That's what I show respect for. If someone is super-good with let's say scratching or turntable mixing, technically, but it's boring to listen/dance to, I just leave the room.

"yo, picasso...what do you call that sh!t? cubist?...that sh!t is whack...learn to draw...oh you can? and you're really good at it?...well...i guess that sh!t is art then"

*edit (no offense to the cubist and their movement)
