Budget Conscious Studio Headphones - Superlux HD662

I was at a gig last night that was sponsored by "Superlux" headphones and they had a stand to Test them all out so guess what ... I did.

Now I normally use my trusty Sony MDR-V6's ...and have done for the past 12 years+, they still sound awesome and apart from the pads needing to be replaced once in their lifetime there's absolutely nothing wrong with them.

Now I'd heard about superlux going back a year or so ago, and read the raving reviews on the 661 which pros were generally saying sounded even better than the V6's, so the long awaited trial begun.

The 661's definitely sounded just as good as the V6's in almost every aspect, however I prefer a little more top end in my headphones....the real problem issue I had with them (and almost their entire range on display) was the headband support was too big! Yes I do have a small head, I do know this, but I've never simply not been able to wear a set of headphones due to it. Normal size head people would certainly not turn their noses up at these headphones though, they were awesome, sound isolation, stereo imaging and blissful low end, the finish on them was not so nice IMHO, being a high gloss fingerprint magnet plastic.

SO I moved onto their studio range, and got to their HD662(F) which HAS an adjustable headband rather than the butterfly clasping thingy on their other offerings they also come in three different bass flavors, deep, natural and enhanced.

By now the bands had started playing at the gig, I put them on and ....... nothing nada, almost zero sound.... the isolation of these headphones is UNREAL, the pads are amazingly soft memory foam (much nicer than the 661's) and HUGE, they completely covered my (also small) ears. Once i turned on the sound my brain started going into a state of bliss and I started seeing colors I never knew existed (ok slight exaggeration). They were however one of the best sounding, best isolating headphones I've ever tried on my skull.

The finish on them is a kind of stitched leather on both the cups and headband which really feels luxurious to the touch, the thick metal crossbars actually double as the audio cable between the cups so nothing to break.

So how much for this ear candy I hear you ask ..... under $50!, as is most of their range! I think i'll be getting a set for home use.





Anyhoo's worth testing them out if you get a chance, I honestly wasn't expecting them to be as good as they are, they also have a DJ aimed headphone which, while sounding similar to the 661 but bassier had 2 issues for DJ use.

1. Could not fold 2. Same Big headband problem. 3. Bass was too exaggerated for home use (fine in a club).

I should mention that almost all of the rest of their headphone range have detachable cables via a standard 3.5mm jack and they come in different coloured accents e.g. white rather than red that you see in the pics.

Really liked you review, i care for the highs too. The only thing is that i think there not that good looking.

They probably look a little too retro for everyones taste, they aren't a gigging headphone though primarily studio use. I really hated the look of the sony v700's and pioneer hdj 1000's
