Ableton live & mixer setup

Hi all,

I’m looking at building a new Ableton Live setup for recording DJ sets at home. I mainly play progressive house and most styles of house music, with the occasional R&B and vocal tracks mixed in.

I’ve owned CDJs and larger DJ setups in the past, but I’ve sold everything and am now starting from scratch. My current setup is a MacBook Air M4 with 16GB RAM, and I’d like to build around Ableton Live rather than traditional DJ software.

I’m interested in using a MIDI controller such as an APC40 Mk2, or something similar, that gives me hands-on control for mixing tracks, triggering clips, creating loops, adding effects, and generally making sets more dynamic and performance-oriented.

One important requirement is flexibility. I’d like a setup that works well at home for recording mixes and practising, but can also integrate with a friend’s Pioneer setup when playing back-to-back. He runs a Pioneer DJM-A9 mixer with the latest XDJ players, so I’d like to understand what hardware would allow me to sync Ableton to a club-standard Pioneer setup and perform alongside CDJs/XDJs.

Ideally, I’m looking for recommendations on:

  • The best MIDI controller(s) for Ableton-based DJing and live remixing.

  • Audio interfaces/sound cards suitable for home use and small parties.

  • Monitoring and speaker recommendations.

  • Headphones suitable for DJing and production.

  • How to integrate Ableton with Pioneer DJM-A9/CDJ/XDJ setups.

  • A complete setup that is cost-effective but still professional enough for house parties and occasional live performances.

Keen to hear what you’d recommend based on today’s hardware options and best practices for Ableton-focused DJ performance, any if there are any easy to ‘drop in’ templates into Ableton live that are designed around a traditional DJ setup?

The B2B integration question is the most tricky, so let me start there. Treat Ableton as a “fourth deck” feeding a spare line channel on the DJM-A9 — your audio interface’s main out goes into the mixer exactly like a CDJ would. The A9 can send MIDI clock out via USB, so set Ableton to receive external sync and it’ll lock to whatever tempo the CDJs are running.

For interface, the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 is the move. Bus-powered, at least two balanced outputs, and it’ll cover you both at home and when you plug into a mixer at a party.

The APC40 Mk2 works well for what you’re describing. If you find yourself wanting jog wheels and more of a DJ layout, the NI Traktor S4 Mk3 runs in MIDI mode and the jogs are excellent — worth knowing exists.
