Active studio monitors

Active studio monitors

My old amp and speaker setup has just about had it now so I’m looking at upgrading to some active monitors. I’m looking at some KRK’s but while looking around I came across the Gemini SR-8 and the iKey M-808v2…

Now am I missing something or are they the same speakers? :expressionless:

Does anyone have any experience with the two speakers?

go with the krks

i like my pioneer sjds

That’s nice guys but it doesn’t answer my original question.

I enjoy my M-audios

They look the same

They are the same. Same company actually.

if you have the bucks, go for yamaha or krk and nothing else.

DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYBODY ON HERE

Sound is something that is extremely subjective. You are going to have to do an “A)B)C)” test and hear them all in comparison with one another in a decently acoustic friendly room.

BUT

If your purpose of buying monitors is for accurate and well proportioned audio then THE KRK ROKIT 5/6/8 G2 IS NOT FOR YOU.

The KRKs exhibit a noticably innacurate low range (bass is not true to life whatsoever), and experience a lack of clarity in the high-midrange and low-high range response (which winds up as a “muddled” sound). Also, if you are looking into the 6" or 8" models, they are actually LESS accurate, than the 5" is. I couldnt possibly recommend the rokits to you with a good concious.

I HIGHLY recommend the TANNOY REVEAL 501a!

This is an extremely accurate monitor. I guarantee that if you were to put the KRK rokits in a side-to-side with the Reveal 501a… your jaw would drop to the floor. Like I previously said, the KRKs have an extremely artificial low range which exaggerates the lows. I know many people that have done the monitor to PA system, track reference test, and I havent encountered anybody that thought the KRKs were anywhere near true to life (which is obviously pretty damn important in producing and mixing). Obviously your not going to have the booming bass with the Reveals, but studio monitors arent about the bottom end (especially with a 5" woofer lol), thats what you get a subwoofer. The Tannoy is much more of a true studio monitor, while the rokits come of as much more of a hi-fi/monitor blend.

I have owned both, albeit the rokits for less than a month, and the Tannoy Reveals are still around while the rokits have long been sold.

Also, the Reveals only retail for about $30 more per monitor than the rokits. I believe they are about $180.00 each (plus whatever discount you can find around) while the rokits are about $150.

Glad I’m not the only one that thinks this.

I noticed the Youtube link on the iKey website goes straight to the Gemini one. What’s the point in selling them under 2 different names?

Cheers for the input mate. I’ll have to pop down to my local DJ store and give them a demo in their speaker room.

This is not my experience with the Rokit 6s at all. It’s not a transparent monitor, true, but I would not describe the sound as “unclear” or “muddled” at all. I also don’t find the bass “inaccurate” per se; it’s clear and punchy, though it disappears below 60-70 Hz (which is not unusual for a speaker this size). And it’s probably artificially boosted, which is what I think you’re referring to. They’re not what you want in a recording studio where fidelity and accuracy is paramount, but they are very pleasant to listen to and they are excellent DJ monitors.

the KRK’s are great for djing with as they are bricks and run hot.. whatever you do don’t buy the gemini! I my experience any product from gemini will die within a year.

If you are looking to produce music I would go with speakers made by genelec. I would not recommend mixing on them thou as they are easy blow

Whichever brand you go for, I suggest you go for self-amplified (also called Active) ones.
Not that passive ones are bad, but active ones have their internal amp matched to the speaker.

Cheers

He said that in his original post dude. Reading ftw.

woopss! indeed!:open_mouth:
I`d go for Krks.. def not Geminis

I stay amazed how much of a fan everyone is of the KRK Rokits. I’ve listened to quite some monitors in their price range, and my conclusion was that the KRKs sound rubbish and that there are many better-sounding monitors which cost the same or even less.

The main use of the speakers will be for home/bedroom DJ use. I know a lot of people that rave over the KRK speakers so naturally those were the speakers I started looking at.

KRK Rokkits are great for DJing and I own two sets of them

What supraman said though about the KRKs is very true- they are not great monitors at all for production as actual studio monitors and I would steer clear if that is your primary use. You won’t beat them for home DJing though.

I used the speaker room at HTFR to have a listen to quote a few different speakers, found them really helpful, (I know some people aren’t so keen on them)

I went for the KRK over the Yamaha, I’m not a producer, so the clarity on the KRK were enough for home use and I like the extra THUMP!

Alright, do me a favor and produce a track (it doesnt matter what genre you choose), finish mastering it. The bring said track to a club and play it over the PA system. Your track will have NO LOWS. Why? Because the KRKs artificially add a bottom end that isnt truly there. So, when it comes time to play said track on a system other than the KRKs, everything is going to be off.

And for anyone to say the KRKs dont muddle the mids and highs means that they are truly being “fanboys” and not offering you fair and accurate advice.
