Anyone mixing 4 decks but NOT minimal or tech?

Just wondering if anyone is mixing with 4 decks with tracks that are more definite than your usual minimal/tech stuff? Basically what I want to know is is anyone mixing tracks where you can tell a new tune has dropped, as opposed to long mixes swimming in FX where you can’t tell one tune from another?
Is anyone actually mixing anything but house with 4 decks?

Just interested to know.

Peace

yes

That’s 4 decks is it? Only the title of the video says 2 decks???
Cool mix all the same, one thing I would say is you should find something that enables you to not have to keep touching the laptop, just my personal opinion.

Anyone doing 4 decks with anything other than house? Hip Hop, DnB etc??

full title is 2 decks and 2 samplers (using c and d as a 2 channel sampler) so using all 4 decks, just titled it that way

dnb would be simple enough to do i reckon, have to get some dnb and try it

Is this in Traktor? How do you use decks as samplers?

back on my traktor 3 map, just used the effects bit of the vci to do basic controls of c and d, and used the duplicate function to copy (or 'sample ) a deck.

use the same layout in Tpro

the decks make up the foundation of the ‘sampler’, similar to the sampler in the djtt tsi is done with the slicer

I mix electro/ hip hop and I mostly mix 2 decks, and tend to add in a third for quick mixes or loops. I don’t know if its my skill level or my genre but never mix all 4.

Got any vids or anything to hear?

Im just wondering why no one mentions B33SON who won the DJTT Competition with his 4 Deck / 10 min Mix

Quality mixing! But I think he was after examples of genres other than house…

I sometimes use 4 decks only playing 3 of them at a time though with dubstep, utilizing the 3rd deck to run a loop and loading up/prepare deck 4, still trying to create the best work flow that suits me.

Currently using my arcaded VCI 100, but seeking a better alternative as this isn’t really fulfilling my needs

I think sarasin might use 4 for psytrance? maybe?

forgot about b33son :open_mouth:

sarasin uses 4 decks for psy, i use four also, mainly for prog psy tho. I dont mean that i would have all four decks running ALL the time, only that at some stage, there will be some overlap between the 3-4 decks.

Ok, let me rephrase. The title of the post should have really said “anyone mixing 4 decks with anything that doesn’t have a constant straight beat”. TBH I dunno why I wrote minimal or tech (probably cos thats all I been seeing).
But what I am looking for is someone who can do 4 (or 3) deck mixing with music that is slightly more challenging then say house, trance, harcore etc.
So DnB, Dubstep, HipHop, Breaks etc. I say these genres are more challenging as DnB has definite melodies so you definitely know when the tracks switch, same with pretty much all of them plus the drums can be so varied, Hiphop is probably the most challenging as it has a lot of vox.
Trance, minimal, tech etc is all boom boom boom with bleepy FX and stuff and you can potentially (note how I said potentially) have 4 decks running with the volume up at the same time and no one would know, especially if it’s all drenched in FX. 4 DnB or Dubstep tracks all at the same time on the other hand… that shit aint gonna fly… its gonna get real messy real quick.

You get what Im saying?

I think the quick answer is no.

I mainly mix ‘harder’ styles of music, so say dubstep/drum and bass and some filthy electro grooves where quicker and ‘harsher’ styles of mixing are used. Four decks is just too much to manage when I am mixing tracks from drop to drop.

Sure. I use three for non-four-on-the-floor genres pretty consistently, and four off and on. But I’m looping a lot of stuff in Ableton too, so who knows how many “decks” there are, lol! Using more than two decks sounds much better if you’re not letting full tracks play out IMHO. That is, if the tracks are not minimal. Simple breaks, intros, outros, the fewer instruments the better - that’s what seems to work best with 3 and 4 deck mixing. Sometimes I need to remind myself not to mix in yet another track just because I can . If it’s making it messy or overly dense, it’s probably not serving the people.

I just started using the beatmasher as a sampler, I play hardcore rap. I usually use it to grab 4 bars from an instrumental and mix into the actual song on that as opposed to using a 3rd/4th deck

According to his Twitter, DJ Craze is. Thats part of why he is using Traktor instead of Serato. Havent been able to find any vids of it, but really havent looked. I know how sick he is, so I kind of take his word for it. He is spinning hip hop, DnB, and Dubstep.

Man, I’d love to see some videos of 4 deck mixing with Dubstep or breaks. If I ever got around to trying this out, I would probably have two decks mixing normally then the third deck for a certain loop and the fourth for a vocal. But it would have to be done really well as to avoid it sounding really messy.

I do

I don’t understand the problem tbh if your tracks are lined up they’re lined up so u can do what u like switching between or mixing with 2, 3 or 4 shouldn’t be a problem. Vocals and clashing Eq ranges can be a problem but a decent mixer or mapped out Eq controls will help with that, and besides you get the same issues with 2 decks anyway.
I found the old hip house stuff I’ve got was the easiest to pick up using 4 decks, setting up loops and cues on 2 digi decks first and mixing a 3rd track in really helped me work faster and stop admiring my work lol and just get my head down to work. After a bit of practice, knowing your tunes, counting beats (I’m not a big beat counter tho tbh) and playing back your mixes, you’ll start to figure out what works and what doesn’t, just like u do with 2 decks imo.
I fool around with anything from my collection now with 4 decks (using TSP 2 SCS3ds and 2TTs), old 80’s early 90s hip-house, techno, rave, hardcore, house, DnB, trance, progressive … it’s all sequenced dance music so I’m just tinkering with the sequence a little and keeping the beat going
