Just a quick question, thinking about getting into CDJ djing (Using 1210’s & TSP at the moment) and want to know if I pick up a pair of cheap CDJ 1000’S (mk2 or 3) for home use is it an easy transition say if I went into a club and jumped on CDJ 2000’s (using CD’S)? I really want to drop the whole laptop thingy and just take a CD folder or USB sticks (I know that the 1000’s don t have these but I am aiming the question more at how the jogs work) :
Seems like a really silly question when I say it out loud but thought I would ask never the less
The workflow between a 1000 and 2000 isn’t much different. There’s just lots of extra stuff on the 2000. Honestly if you “just” want to take something small to a club, why not get some 900s and a SD card reader, and “just” take your SD card?
I just highlighted the two bits that jumped out at me first…i’ll touch on the ‘drop the laptop’ bit in a mo.
You are using 1210s with TSP, you could get a pair of 1000’s and use timecode CDS as a direct replacement for the 1210s…I also use TSP with timecode, either on 1210s or my old CDJ800 mk1s…depending only mood. I’ve often thought about updating my CDJs, but since I’m just using timecode, i never saw the point.
If I’m playing in a venue with a djm900, i don’t have to rewire anything, just plug in 1 usb cable, insert my timecode cds into their CDJs (1000, 2000 doesn’t really matter) and work away.
On the ‘drop the laptop’ line, the 1000 MK3s will play mp3 files off a CD…if you wanted to go that way. If you want to be more modern, any of the new CDJs (850, 900, 2000…) will let you play off usb stick and id recommend using rekordbox
IMO i would stick with TSP but use CDJs as a timecode source
It kinda made sense back when you had to burn CDs if you were happy playing on CDJs and just wanted an easier library. I wouldn’t do it today.
If you just want to learn how to spin on CDJs, using something like a DDJ-SX or SR, leaving SDJ in it’s browser-only view, and ignoring all the extra functions is more cost effective. The biggest downside is having to prep tracks in both SDJ and Rekordbox, you know…assuming you’re using the quantized looping and what not.
I would agree, if the OP was buying 2ks…but a pair of 1ks aren’t exactly expensive…it also means he can use his existing mixer and controller.
Yes i use my old CDJs for timecode…i also compliment the modular setup with a zone 1d for transport and effect controls. Personally as a gigging DJ i find the modular set up suits me better…every club has CDJs and a mixer…all i need to add then is my 1d, and audio interface if the mixer isn’t a 900.
You make a good argument, but I still just don’t get it.
CDJ-1000mk3s still cost several hundred dollars each. And with timecode that effectively gets you more hardware to fail, more latency, a pitch fader, a platter, and play & cue buttons that don’t really work right.
I’d buy 350s and deal with them feeling cheap and having no resale value long before I’d do that.
Yeah…I meant just using the USB. $500 is way too much to pay for a deck controller, IMHO.
See…this is why I haven’t really owned Pioneer gear…I’m just not happy with what you get for the money unless you’re going to go all out and buy the new top-end (or one down) deck right after it comes out.
but on the flip side, with a modular setup, you can afford lose a CDJ or TT or controller and still have enough equipment left working to finish a set. If you have an all in one type controller with built in sound card…and that dies…youre fu*ked…
I haven’t had any issues with latency using timecode, and apart from a slight cue point drift, I’ve never had issues with play/cue, the pitch fader or platter.
my original point was trying to suggest that the OP didn’t need to drop traktor from his setup as CDJs of any kind would be a direct replacement for his TTs
A pair of 1ks are f**** expensive compared to a pair of single deck controllers like eks otus, behringer pl-1 or denon sc2000.
And with them you also use the existing mixer but also get all the bells and whistles of Traktor (hotcues, efx control, etc). Not to mention, pa pair of them & laptop fit in any backpack
semi off topic, but i’m using the 800 mk2’s with timecode and an djm850. i gig at least once a week. i used to use an all in one S4, but it scared me knowing if my mixer died, i was screwed. or if my computer died i was screwed.
with my current setup, if my computer dies, i’ve got cd’s, if one of my cd’s dies, i can run off one deck mapped properly, if my mixer dies, i plug one cd player or ipod directly into the speaker.
i’m a mobile DJ mostly, and i need backup for my backup. depends what you’re doing, and what you’re comfortable. i need options, because clients are paying top dollar, and demand music.
