As a DJ do you have any Do's and Dont's?

As a DJ do you have any Do’s and Dont’s?

my question is general, and a good question it is as well, as a DJ what do you never do, or always do before a set? never drink alcohol, never play too explicit lyrics, never take requests, never play house, always play a rock song and so on.

Please write one Do and one Don’t.

The reason I am asking as well is since I today stumbled upon a moral issue, I made a mash up/botleg from three songs. But would YOU play a song like this at the clubs?
Should I “BLEEP” the words that aren’t appropriate or is that just a part of the game to you guys?
So to sum up, one of your own do’s one don’t, and WOULD you play a song of the type I just posted.

I like that tune a lot!

I will play anything in a club, explicit lyrics don’t matter, infact i encourage them. If you’re old enough to be in a club you are old enough to hear songs with bad language or drug/sex references - since you’ve probably indulged in at least one of them.

I do:
Drink during a gig, not before, but once i’m comfortable and in my groove.

I don’t: Get stoned before or during a gig any more, since i haven’t played any dub gigs for a while, and i find it really impairs my mixing/attention span with EDM.

Thanks man, cool that you liked the tune, It’s almost completed!

Nice answers to btw, I agree on the first point on not to drink until you are very comfortable. Stoned I wouldn’t know, would never try that dubstep or not

before a set? well…

I do: have people over, pregame, drink, have a good time and get psyched up so I bring lots of energy to the club in my set.

I don’t: start drinking before 5 pm anymore on the day of a gig, especially if it’s one of those late night shows where I’m not gonna get back until past 4 or 5. I feel like more than 12 hours of drunkenness is just too hard to sustain.

…this comes from experience from that one time over the summer where I went down to the pool around 2pm, drank all day, drank some more, and then went and played a set from 12 - 4:30am. yeahhhhh.

Nice tune!

I don’t do gigs, but if your getting paid you need to give them what they ask for. Be respectable, don’t drink, don’t leave the building, all that good stuff.

So you woud say alcohol is a must for you? Or maybe it’s something you want?
Whoa haha, I’d say you are a heavy drinker DJ kinda guy, you on soundcloud perhaps?

Thanks for the reply!

Thanks man appreciate it.

And thanks for your opinions on do’s and dont’s!

I’m just saying be professional. . .don’t wear a pink thong on your head, then start break dancing knocking old grannies over like bowling pins at a wedding.

Can’t even begin to tell you how much I appreciate that advice!

Thanks, Broe Montana!

Not dubstep, i used to run a Ska & Dub Reggae night, the venue had a nice outside area and we used to throw BBQs there with bands on throughout the day, so inevitably i ended up smoking between sets, was a blast with some heavy dub, i suppose dubstep would be the same but it’s still a bit more technical to mix than old dub.

Right then, get you on that point, and about mixing dubstep, I just play it safe it kinda never mix beats, just make sure it’s according to the camelot and it will be pretty seemless anyway since dubstep nowadays is fluctuating so much in the separate song anyway, if you get what I mean.

Gear - Gig - Setup - Distractions - Nipple Cream - Evade - Play Out - Sexy Party

Don’t: Forget your gear:

No Matter what your Rockin’:

And always get your Vinyl from the best stacks:

Don’t: Forget that, no matter what happens…make it to your gig:

Don’t: Forget to always connect your gear correctly:

Don’t: Forget to check out these distractions…often.

Which eventually look like this:

Do: Have an assistant, who is always ready and willing:

Do: Remember, who to invite to the afterparty:

Unless you look like this:

And if you’re not too busy killing it with your new S4:

Which has you doing something like this:

Where you will need your:

Nipple Cream (That’s a joke)

Don’t: Forget to Dodge, Duck and Evade…everything that comes at you…

Except this:

Or this:

Don’t: Forget that you’re never too young:

Never too Old:
check out this flikr set, awesome!

Never too deaf:

Never too Vulcan:

But you’re always cooler than Yoda:

And most of the time…Electric:

But, of course…Control, is Always yours:

And everytime you play out…it will always look like this:

Until the after party. Which should always be called…“Sexy Party”:

…when it looks like this:

And Neverrrr, Everrrrr forget that DJ’s…

Good stuff. No worries there. If you’re crowd sensitive, you can mash it, sample, scratch and bitcrush it. Anything’ll do.

If you record your set, post it. That would be cool.

I wouldn’t worry about dropping anything out of it. Sounds like it’s going hit hard and be a fun party.

Pics or it never happened

Getting drunk before playing … my only weakness

Holy moly! What a reply!

Try coffee instead! It works for me at least! And if you want put a little baileys in the coffee to sooth your nerves..

I wouldn’t worry too much about swearing and such.
But yeah, getting drunk is a no-no, have a few drinks thought if you want.
Even at a house party, getting drunk is for afterwards… kegstand while trying to mix… AWESOME IDEA (in theory) but BAAAAAAAD IDEA (in practice).

Also:
@b3nz0n8: You win at life. That post was one of, if not, the most EPIC post I have seen.

Thanks man!

I’ll use it in a 45-60 minute set soon, Will post it or just use it in a mixtape..
Glad you liked it..
thanks for tips and opinions.

-Show me the panties or it never happened I say.

Yet again the alcohol, haha. Thanks for opinions!

And I agree on that, the most epic and weird post ever.

Do’s before: check gear bag, run disk utility on Mac to repair permissions and disable bluetooth and wifi, relax or even better take a nap and if it is possible have sex.
Do’s in the gig:drink but always start slow, read the crowd and always try to mix those songs that I never tried or heard that mix before.
Do not before: pot, drink or spicy food.
During the gig do not’s: pot, sit, discuss with the customers , make announcements or whatever on mic and play “las mananitas”, get too horny with you know those kind of girls
