Attack of the Show with Ean Golden

xonetacular quit being such a forum-fail.

the point of that segment was to not only show what the controller could do, but HOW the controller was doing it IN FIVE MINUTES.

If Ean had done a really advanced routine he wouldn’t have had enough time to explain it in a way that the general viewer (who doesn’t know anything about controllerism) would understand it.

I thought it was a great segment, even as someone who’s been into controllerism for years. Do I think he held back? Obviously he did, he had to to make the segment understandable for the general audience. The show wasn’t trying to cater to DJs specifically but also to people who are unfamiliar with djing and controllerism in general.

Otherwise known as performing…

If you want to impress someone who knows nothing/little about DJing
you got to keep it simple if you want them to have a chance of being able to deconstruct what you just did.

Well in that case he should have been doing it with two knobs since it would have been more clear that he was using them to modify effect parameters, assigning it to the jogs and faders is disguising what is going on behind the scenes. Someone who this is new to will associate the jog wheels with a turntable platter like they should, which they associated with scratching a record, they might also associate the volume faders with turntablism and scratching and since it was making scratch type sounds they would think he was digitally scratching and I’m sure that’s what most viewers thought. Thus making it harder, more complicated, and probably nearly impossible for someone who has never used Traktor and a midi controller before to understand what was going on.

Overall it was a great segment and it got the message across that “DJ controllerism is cool and looks fun even though I have no idea what was going on” across to the non DJ viewer. I think that is a great result and hopefully we will see some new members sign up who saw it and want to learn more. I would like to hear from one of them what they thought.

Your internet 101 lesson was weaksauce. There, I said it again, what an offensively fitting word to describe it.

Crap,i missed it.Where can i watch it again or are thera any rips or something..really want to watch this show..

Keep it movin…

This one of those threads that can obviously end up in a forum flame war. Xonetacular no need to defend your position. Your points are valid and everyone response to your commentary are just as valid. The segment was not focus towards any of us. The knowledge and passion for controllerism is already exist between the numerous post by all of us who been following this forum way before the segment. It is now up to the audience of the show who now been exposed to the concept of controllerism to seek out more info on the topic. Now more people aware of the “cotrollerism” movement and perhaps will end up here. Are numbers will increase and the idea will be more excepted. Everyone has there own level of skill. the cream will rise to the top. What I like to see is more of us who are here already demonstrate what is possible and not land it on the the coat tails of Ean. What I think would be best would to have all of us do our own demontration and post it on youtube or whatever media hub that exisit and have it link back to the forum. I mean Ean is already doing it because it got us here. So go out and grab your cameras record your best 5-10 minute routine post it on youtube and link it back to this forum/thread. You would be doing yourself god and helping all of us along the way. No matter what the stand out performances will drive buzz don’t worry about the ones that come off as “weaksauce”. So let us not waste our time praising or criticizing Ean remember he doing what he loves but at the same time running a business.

that is my 2 cents.

DOWN3E4T OUT

Good idea, and now I have to buy a video camera, damnit. I have been putting off the purchase for a while since I like using my money to buy DJ gear I can use or make money off of. Any good cheap ones?

Dude I hear you! In my day job I do graphic, web design, video production and photography. Djing paid the bills when I was in school but now the DJ thing is just pure hobby but shit all the gear I acquired over the years will make your pockets scream lol

I too went to school for architecture and finished in Industrial design. and under stand what you mean about critism that would make you cry. Boy do I got stories lol.

Anyway, there are plenty of reasonable options out there. I don’t know what your budget is but I gonna advise my cheapest solution.

Get yourself a webcam. and pipe your audio out from your computer/mixer directly into the mic input of your computer.

Next setup a youtube account.

Now go to any of the free video broadcasting sites like livestream or ustream.tv and set up an account. I personally use ustream.tv. You can broadcast live from your computer and record your broadcast at the same time.

I like ustream.tv because they have an option that will take the recorded stream you created and push it into your youtube account.

Lastly when you get a few dollars get yourself a firewire camera you get better video quality out of a firewire connected camera. of course you have to have a firewire enabled computer.

If your really strap for cash I suggest getting this
http://www.amazon.com/Kodak-Zi8-Pocket-Camera-Black/dp/B002HOPUPC

the reason I advise this is first it under 200 bucks and second it takes high definition video but what most important is has audio input. so you can connect a rca to 1/8 connection right into it and get good sound quality to your hd video.

this device records to removable sd card but has a built in usb plug like the flip mino device.

Hopefully that some help to you all. We done the talk so let up walk the walk.
I need to work on a controllerism routine of my own.

@Kewlbreeze: I actually tried the whole ‘More Flies with Honey than Vinegar’ thing once for a science class in high school, and you do actually get more flies with a petri dish of balsamic than with honey, which I thought was hilarious.

But I thought the video segment was good. I’m not sure why Ean looks so much like Jesus what with the hair and the beard and everything, but I think he presented controllerism as very accessible, especially after the host of the show poked at the buttons and managed to spit something out.

Thanks for the link!

i thought Ean’s spot was great! Long Live DJTT!

i think it was a cool segment that will def help to push the controllerism movement forward. respect, Ean.

Hey guys. I’ve been silent for a long while now, but had to give my kudos to this great segment and Ean’s great performance! Ean did a fantastic job at giving controllerism a friendly, public face which is what any movement needs in order to gain momentum and acceptance.

i think it was a cool segment that will def help to push the controllerism movement forward. respect, Ean.

Yup just my tuppence-worth to say well done Ean - great presentation. Judging from the comments left on the site it looks like there’s a few Christmas lists this year that will include the letters VCI

Just watched this and thought it was a good performance. It will certainly perk up more people’s interest in controllerism as a new form of DJing, which can only be a good thing.

Some people on this thread have mentioned that the performance was not all it could have been - you may be right there but I know it to be the case that sometimes an amazingly good performance, as impressive as it is to watch, may leave the audience thinking “thats very nice but I can’t do that”. This would be missing the point as Ean would want people to say “hey thats great, I can do that”.

I also thought Ean’s presentation and explanation of controllerism was clear and concise. Well done Mr Golden!

I’m surprised that no one has asked to what extent this was intended immediately after the release of the vestax spin. The spot seemed to peak on the more fiscally available vestax spin. Nothing against it, as DJTT got great publicity, but I couldn’t help but wonder if the guys at Vestax/Apple had a big hand in setting this up. Congrats Ean and DJTT as it looked great and no doubt will keep controllerism moving forwards!

Look, its not about criticism when you are basically putting someone down, or basically telling them that what they did is weak, or how ever you wanna put it. He was putting Ean’s segment down. It all goes about how you project things to people, and basically your overall tone, and Xonetaculars overall tone has been discussed in other threads on this forum where he is basically making fun of people.

Personally I don’t care if you wanna make fun of me. I have dealt with tough sh!t all my whole life. I played ice hockey from 3years old through college and junior pros, I have DJ’d and produced music for quite sometime now as well… Just like many people on this board who are DJs and producers we are all subject to criticism, and we deal with it all the time, so no need to preach about architecture school or whatever, I am not impressed, nor do i expect you to be impressed by what I have done.. bottom line, ther is a right way and a wrong way to criticize… you don’t need to sugar coat it, but you also don’t need to use language and tone that is offensive, simple as that. It was clear with what you wrote in that first response to this thread that there was some form of jealousy, or elitist mentality that was conveyed in what you wrote…

hopefully you smarten up and learn to be a constructive part of this forum. This is one place that i enjoy reading on a daily basis to get ideas, gain some knowledge and also i try and give back when I can here… Its ok to square off and debate issues, just try and do it so we all don’t end up hating you 2 weeks from now.

^boohoo we are over this. Cry me a river, I am constructive and I don’t know how all of you emo hyper sensitive people make it in the DJ world. Then again what am I saying, you are probably all bedroom DJs. I was completely constructive and you can’t have criticism without criticizing wich is inherently negative. We’ve been over this already.

As digital MIDI controller DJs you really need to toughen up and grow some thicker skin if you ever want to make it into the bar/club scene with promoers and people who aren’t going to be so understanding of your laptop and controller setup. At real gigs you are going to get tons of shit from people asking where the turntables and CDJs are, a little constructive criticism is nothing.

if you wnat to do the controllerism movement a favor stop making it seem like all digital DJs are whiny overly sensitive pussies.

corrected for accuracy..

The segment was cool, dope to see stuff like that hit the “big box”.

You are obviously very, very constructive.
