Beginner DJ from Georgia looking for guidance on building a minimal, reliable setup

Hi everyone,

I’m a beginner DJ from Georgia (Caucasus region), currently focused on learning proper fundamentals — beatmatching, phrasing, transitions, and understanding DJ workflows instead of shortcuts.

I wanted to share a bit of context about my situation, mainly to get more realistic advice.

Where I live, DJ gear is relatively hard to access and very expensive compared to average income. Used gear is rare, shipping costs are high, and even entry-level controllers can represent several months of savings. Because of this, learning often means borrowing equipment, practicing in short sessions, or working with very minimal setups.

Despite that, I’m committed to learning things the right way. I’m not chasing quick gigs or trends — I care about fundamentals, sound quality, and respecting the craft. I spend most of my time studying mixes, reading about gear, and practicing whenever I get access to equipment.

I’d really appreciate advice on:

  • the most minimal but reliable setups you’d recommend for learning properly

  • which features actually matter for a beginner, and which are overrated

  • mistakes you’ve seen beginners make when buying gear on a tight budget

  • how you’d approach learning again if you had almost no resources

If anyone has been in a similar situation or started under financial constraints, I’d be grateful to hear how you approached it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and respect to everyone here sharing knowledge and keeping DJ culture healthy.

Best regards,
