this has been going on for about a year now, maybe longer actually, I remember seeing a line 6 pod on the shelf one day and doing a serious double take when I bought a new hard drive.
Best Buy has sold keyboards and beginner guitars. This is just another beginner market they are trying to tap into, especially with the release of DJ Hero.
Because there are a lot more advantages to having a local store with people that might be able to answer your questions re software, gear and compatibility than another mega-store filled with 17 year old high school kids who could give fuck-all about being informed on the warez we rely on.
Music stores by me don’t sell DJ gear. But there are shops around me (like Turntable Lab) that do sell this stuff. They do know some things about it. And I’d even consider the Sam Ash and Guitar Center by me a local gear shops, and some of those guys really do know stuff.
Granted, I’m not concerned about you and me, bento. I’m concerned about the multitude of new DJs who will get bad advice from a Best Buy and then come here bitching because they were told their MIDI controller could make them sound like Tiesto.
the guys in Guitar Center around here are retards… They don’t know anything about any type of DJ or production gear, but its really funny to hear them talk like they do…
Yeah… best buy guys cant even tell me which hardrive I should by, and have never even heard of solidstate drives… and no they are going to try and help people buy dj’ing gear? wat?
but on the guitar center thing, a couple of the guys are really great in there. one guy in paticular actually has my number, and will call me when things go on sale and whatnot (hello lpd8 for 59 dollars).
No, Best Buy didn’t acquire Guitar Center. They’ve rolled out around 90 musical instrument stores this year, and have plans to expand that number regularly every year. In a single year, they’ve already become the 2nd biggest MI chain in the US.
I don’t understand this elitist attitude to instrument sales - especially when it comes to DJ products. How many people that frequent these forums have a BB close to them, but not a Guitar Center? How many people have an MI store close to them where they can lay their hands on working controllers - connected to computers and speakers? Even in their “regular” MI stores, they all show products connected and working. When was the last time you went to a music store and found needles on the turntables or computers actually running software?
This is good for everyone. BB and GC are now competing with each other. What do you think that’s going to do to the price of equipment? And BB is spending a lot of money getting this stuff out in front of people and making it accessible. How is that a bad thing?
That’s true…Although it just so happens that none of the guys at my local store use controllers like the VCI-100. I think most of them (if not all), use Serato + control vinyl. So lately I’ve just gotten in the habit of asking people online.
I figure that I tend to buy a lot of DJ Gear off ebay, so if Best Buy carried for the same price, then it would be a good option.
