After much research I finally ordered the first of my parts for my DIY midi mixer. Here is my parts list so far

Its to bad the original website does not have a data sheet for the part, so i am not sure what type of shaft it had (i.e flattened D or serrated etc). From the picture it looks like its flat and plain so I will probably have to file down a side to make it into a flattened D so i can put the Dj tech tools knobs on them with out them slipping everywhere.

I though instead of buttons it would be cool to control filter on and off and PFL on and off with switches like these to give it a kind of home brew look. I would have a dedicated filter section on the top, for each channel, then the eqs then switches for PFL then the faders. And at the bottom to top it all off 5 arcade buttons just for fun. And on the side i will have 3 Knobs for master volume PFL volume and mix/PFL along with a few switches for shift functions. I decided not to put a cross faded because I never used one when I had an analog 4 channel mixer. Also was going to put on encoders for the gains but since this is going to sit in between my xone 1d and 2d I figured i would just use the encoders on them.

I hope to keep my progress posted and hopefully it this will prove helpful for others trying to do the same thing.

dont you need 5 fader caps, not 4? 4 for each line, and then 1 for the cross :S

As stated in the bottom of my post i’m not going to have a cross fader, but thanks for the concern :smiley:

So I finally found some good panel mounted, center detent potentiometers, I will be posting the link to them in the OP.

Look what i got in the mail today! Unfortunately the knobs do not fit on my potentiometer, i neglected to notice that a 1/4" shaft is actually 6.35mm instead of needed 6mm sigh I found a website selling RK09L1220 Rotary pot. 10KBx2CC which is an alps 10K ohm linear duel potentiometer with center indent and flattened D shaft.

I had to email them to get a quote on how much it would be. Shipped to the US it would be 39,48 EUR which is about $50. :\ this is quite a bit more then i wanted to spend, but i guess going the cheaper rout got me a bunch of potentiometers i cant use.

Just pack out the holes in the pots with some rolled up paper…

I wish it was that simple, the shaft for the pot is too big to fit in the knob.

Drill out the knobs? (Clutching at straws, now!)

File the pots down

Filing down a circular shaft evenly would be a total pain. However! Since the European site i found the alps potentiometers at was taking so long to respond I did a bit more browsing at mouser and found they pots i was looking for! and for way cheaper too! :smiley: Anyways posted link in OP.

So I pretty much have all my external parts for the mixer now, minus 2 arcade buttons. I am going to finish the CAD drawing of the face place and hopefully by tomorrow night i will have it CNC water jet cut :smiley:

Here’s everything, the center detent alps pots on the right, my enclosure with the tentative layout, you can even see my plate of 1/8" Aluminum i’m going to use for the face plate in the back:

This is everything laid out basically how it is going to be, 8 Arcade buttons on the bottom faders, arcade buttons for PFL and some small black buttons for filter on and off.

Here is the aluminum enclosure i am using, right side up.

Might I ask where you got the metal enclosure? I am building a controller too but can’t find a suitable enclosure like yours. My topic:

After a couple days worth of quality time with the drill press and coping saw i finally got everything cut. I got a couple quotes from the local machine shops on how much it would be to get cnc’d and it was anywhere from $250 to $350 sooo that was not happening. I used a coping saw to put the slits in for the faders, I will clean those up a little with a file before painting. Anyways here are the results. The Jig saw went little astray on me and i’m pretty sad about about the side that got a little messed up but it’s not to bad.

Notice on the right side how it comes in just a tad too much.

Putting the holes on the back side that keep the pots from moving around was a real pain.

Bit late to mention this now but CNC work is almost always more expensive than going somewhere that does ‘hole punching’. If you’re designing an enclosure with lots of circle and square holes then these can usually be hole punched (if they don’t have the right sized hole punch then they can use smaller hole punches to ‘nibble’ the hole to the correct size). It’s only if you want unusual shaped holes that you’d need to go the CNC route.

I did not know this. How much would you estimate a project like mine would have been to get punched? I mean, there are always going to be more projects :slight_smile:

I’m just about to get a quote from a South East UK company for a similar enclosure… I’m putting aside around $150 (which includes materials and setup costs)… more details soon (I’m planning a big DIY build with a blog to chart my progress)

Did you get a quote for waterjetting?

I got mine done that way and it only cost me £80 - I had to give them the cad file though..
