Cable Advice Needed

Can anyone comment on cabling for me? My signal path goes:

Laptop USB OUT > DJM-850 USB IN > DJM-850 RCA out > Behringer XENYX 1002 1/4" IN > Behringer XENYX 1002 1/4" OUT > T-AMP RCA IN.

Phew! :open_mouth:

I’d like to get an XLR OUT of my DJM 850 going to the Behringer XENYX 1002 1/4" IN.

Would 2 of THESE do the job???

I’ve never used XLR’s before. Do I need to worry about anything - or is XLR to 1/4" a straight swap???

Straight forward swap and yes these would do the job nicely.

Beaut! Thanks for the quick response.

No worries sir, are you using the xlr ins, if not could use those, would give you eq control overall, could be handy?

You mean on the Behringer?

I though tthose were for Mics only? I might be wrong… Prett cool if they’re not, though!

re: eq’s - I’ve just bought a nice little T-Amp with bass and treble controls.

You can use them for line as well, just make sure the phantom power is off.

Well if you have controls on the T-amp then just go for the original way of XLR to TRS from the DJM.

But at least now you know about the Behringers inputs.

Nice one.

I probably will use the XLR in on the Xenyx. No point using non-standard cables unless there is a specific need to!

The XLR inputs are Mic level, so you probably won’t be able to connect your DJM to them.

The Xenyx TRS line inputs are balanced, so you should really buy balanced XLR-TRS cables.

I also don’t see why you can’t use the same EQs with the TRS inputs - unless there’s something I’m missing?

Because the mixer supports both balanced and unbalanced 1/4" connections, I would suggest you prefer to use a balanced patch cable. Depending on the need for male/female xlr…

OR

Thanks for the advice, guys. Much appreciated.

So - just buying 2 of these should take care of the connection from the DJM-850 to the Behringer mixer:

Pretty colours are important to me.

Then, to go from the Behringer mixer to the T-Amp, one of these:

Just wanna make sure I don’t connect anything that goes BANG!

Yes, those look right. I’d use adapters for connecting to the T-Amp rather than yet another specialised cable, but that’s just personal preference.

You could also use more of these adapters and use the RCA output of the DJM850 instead of the XLR outs, if you have spare RCA leads lying around.

Makar1 - I’m taking the plunge on spending some money on nice cables so that I can finally get rid of some stock cables n’ connectors that I’ve got lying around! Over the years I’ve accumulated a MASS of various RCA’s and connectors/adapters.

I’ve just had a LITTLE windfall and decided to blow it on some nice cables. :+1:

'Cos I know how to live.

Thanks for the advice - I appreciate it.

Just out of interest, what are you hoping to achieve by using the XLR outputs?

Any why do you have the Behringer unit at all?

The cables that you’ve chosen in your last post will do the job but the reality is that for the best sound get some decent RCA leads to go from the RCA output of your DJM to your T-Amp.

EDIT: nice cables … Hmmmm … Try and find some with real Neutrik connectors and Canare/Mogami cable, not the ones you have posted.

Frankle - I just want to use the Master1 Outs of the DJM.

I have the behringer unit because I sometimes use a 2nd laptop for multi-track mixes (some weak ass juggle routines, for example) and so I need to hear the output from Ableton Live from one lappy, and Traktor from another. Having the separate mixer means I’m not fiddling about behind mixers and amps if I need to do any re-routing.

I actually used to use a Behringer patchbay for this - but it got a bit messy, and was taking up too much space on my desk.

I’ll post a set-up pic sometime.

In your PM you said ou had a suggestion? Wanna elaborate?

So your T-Amp, does it only have RCA inputs or are there any form of balanced (XLR or TRS) inputs?

Just RCA’s. It’s one I got from ebay - and it is GREAT for the money:

Here’s the rear panel:

It’s a hi-fi amp, going into 100w (8ohm) hi-fi speakers.

I want to be sure none of the cables I buy are gonna cause any damage to the amp/speakers…

The one that’s confusing me at the moment, is the XLR to TRS cables. I’ll need to buy 2 (for Pio outs M1 L + R, obviously), but does each one need to be MONO or STEREO? I would have assumed MONO, but someone earlier linked to stereo ones.

You’re not going to damage anything with your cables, as long as you don’t use the XLR inputs on the Xenyx.

I’d recommend Neutrik connectors too if you’re wanting quality.

Okay - what about 2 of these (Pio M1 L +R, to Xenyx 1 + 2):

and 1 of these Xenyx Main Out, to t-amp inouts):

Ā£30’ish quid is doable for a nice treat for myself…

(Still need an answer for teh MONO/STEREO issue, though…)

Each XLR-TRS cable is balanced mono. ā€œStereoā€ (3 conductor) connectors are used for balanced mono connections, so you’ll be buying two ā€œstereoā€ cables.

yeah - I understand that. is that what I want to do, though? Will I be connecting a ā€œmaleā€ stereo plug, into a female ā€œmonoā€ mic input on teh Xenyx? Can I do that/should I do that that?
