I have to say, its pretty much what we expected. Unfortunately it brings nothing new to the table for laptop jocks, who have all these facilities already.
For me, its major place is in bringing over cdj’s dj’s to the digital arena. If part of your workflow becomes the routine use of a computer to prep tracks, then it will become part of your mindset.
All in all, nice one pioneer, but I don’t think this is the way the market is going.
I’m a big fan of Pioneer but would i go and spend the cash on these ?
But i must admit if the platter works as well as it does on the CDJ’s then i think this is a cool controller !
very expensive. And, like dj moonie wrote, nothing really new for the inclined “DJ Tech Tools” guys ![]()
Still, if it’s widely adapted by clubs, it might be a nice alternative to carrying around your laptops and controllers – just plug in an USB stick and off you go.
Thats it ! slip SD in your pocket and your away! I do like the look of it though!
I haven’t clicked on the pioneer links yet, but I’ve just been sent this Youtube link
Got to agree with Moonie. It’s not adding anything we haven’t already got in software.
There’s no way in hell I’d pay $4300 for a pair; plus as peeps on other forums have mentioned, they’re useless unless clubs get them installed asap
CDJ’s are everywhere, whereas I’ve not seen all that many venues with USB-compatible players
Plus the rekordbox software is useless unless you’re using a CDJ-2000, whereas CD’s will work in any player and your laptop comes with you
I think it’s too little too late… (although if I won the lottery I wouldn’t say no rofl)
As I’ve mentioned above, there are no new features here that laptop dj’s haven’t already expected for the last couple of years. Also, although the colour screen is nice, the reality is that browsing through anything but small or very well organised playlists on that size screen isn’t going to be fun.
The real power of the laptop over dedicated hardware like this, is that it can leverage multiple tools to create the workflow you want.
If all clubs had em, I’d use em.
They probably won’t get them, at least for another 3-4 years anyway, if ever and i’m not going to buy them, not at that price.
Having these at home and then not being able to use them in a club would be pointless, you’d never bring them with you. If you did, you might as well bring laptop and controller, which would be easier to set up.
If all clubs get these, great, i’m sure we’d all be on it. I won’t hold my breath.
Oh i can do this with traktor since… hum can’t remember…
And with the vci and ean’s mapping i can do this on 4 tracks at a time and release them sync-ed… And it’s less expensive
I have to say, i would love to go in a club with just my SD card (and an other one for backup, even if they are rock solid) and just plug it in and play on 4 decks ! I have to work on my 4 decks beatmatching tho  haha
but.. you only get the software if you’ve bought the cdj’s, so how are you going to prep unless you also have these things at home ?
This has been my point for a while!!! To use in a club your gonna need them at home …
… and the people saying they would be a cool controller !! WTF!!! Thats some seriously expensive controller .. just buy a full Traktor scratch setup and a controller with buttons and knobs! And you’ll still have money to spare. ![]()
Big ol flop if you ask me
With you 100% there Bento.
I think pioneer should have teamed up with a laptop maker and created either a hyrbid PC, or gone full out and done something like the xone 4d.
I think debate about their suitability for home/practice use is kinda a waste of time, the mk3 was by no means suitable for the price conscious dj, it is all about the clubs, which is reflected in the features.
It would be great if pioneer did something directly aimed at our end (/niche) in the market but from the first announcement alone it was obvious it would not be.
I really cant see these being adopted by clubs in the same manner the Mk3 was however because at this point most DJ’s who really crave the extra level of control and creativity have all ready switched and by the time most clubs are looking to upgrade that user base will have exploded, and wont be looking back.
I think the coolest thing for us as (mostly) non serato users the coolest thing is that it can be used as a interface which greatly simplifies setup, especially when switching between two laptop dj’s.
Don’t be fooled. Whilst Pio have put their stamp on the ‘pro’ market, I bet you that the number of units (from across the range) shipped to individual dj’s as opposed to clubs, is much much bigger.
I also don’t think that price necessarily determines features. It may in some cases reflect build quality, but the very essence of this thread is that you can get everything you want from these babies at a fraction of the price if you go down the fully digital route.
Pioneer need to adapt to this change.
IMO: I think that while the cd djing is approaching the “traditional” digital djing, it is likely that the leap to Traktor/Ableton world becomes smaller for the djs. Especially with these kind of price ranges, controllers like OTUS and Stanton SCDHSFwhatdoyoucallitdecksortofthingie are likely to get more popular amongst the djs, and thus copied by the chinese companies.
+1 …
i can’t see this product becoming anywhere near as popular as the cdj-1000s.
Looks like a decent unit overall, but terrible timing.
