Pioneer - Dawn of a new Species

Pioneer - Dawn of a new Species

Looks like Pioneer are looking to announce something big:

I cant see the video at work but I did find this off skrathworx:

God this looks interesting! I dare say my purchases are on hold till I find out what this is. Pioneer needs something big to get themselves back on top.

is it not just going to be a cdj that has a really decent screen on it for djing using mp3s. From what hes saying that sounds like thats what its gonna be. Allows djing from mp3 without laptop or need for any media. Prob has a hard drive in it etc etc etc …

I hope its not as flash as that or will cost a fortune knowing pioneer. I think the best to ask would be a glorified cdj controller with a big screen on it and lots of midi assignable knobs.

We will see… and so will our overdrafts!

I am agreeing with mistermoleymole here!

A CDJ with a harddrive is probably the way to go - it would be great to start moving away from laptop screens…

This image has been floating around

An obvious fake:

  • No more track forward/back buttons, you won’t miss those
  • A fourth hot loop button is just not intuitive anymore
  • What’s with the direction button “both”? Depending on your luck it will play forward or backwards?
  • No more ‘CDJ’ jog mode? Sure, who needs that anyhow?
  • Pitch bend buttons instead of a rotary button. Great, that way, you can press the button to give 0,50% increments, giving a very very smooth transition

But may actualy resemble what it ends up looking like.

ooh I definitely like the look of Sam’s picture. Although we all know it’s gonna cost the earth. I’d stab at £1100 each minimum. Any advance on that?

Thats definitively a fake although would agree that it will resemble something like that.

The thing is people moan about looking at laptop screens but all it means is that they will be now looking at a screen (a much smaller one) on a cdj!

I have cdjs and love using them but its crazy owning a pair to simply use as a midi controller which is why I am selling.

and another:

I reckon an upgraded mk3 with no hard drive, but flash and maybe usb HDD support, a large decent rez screen which allows decent on deck track selection, wave form graphics etc. Probably midi support to some level.

I would guess the application will allow you to prepare the tracks grid, cue points, loops etc at home as well.

Two things that I see coming from pioneer

  1. A well devised player that will be severly expensive and the new rage in CD Decks
  2. Nothing that makes it a new species.

HDD player already exist
Large screens on controllers/cd players already exist
CD decks already exist

hense not a new species

A chicken can have kids with a lizard and it would be a new species, but that doesn’t mean that it’s usefull or a step in the right direction.

Thinking about it - surely a pioneer HDD player would be fairly unnecessary? unless you’re a really swanky mobile DJ…

They’re really going overkill on the whole HDD jive I think. Sure, Mr. Zabiela doesn’t like DVS, but there are plenty of big DJs who’ve got around the laptop ‘email checking’ barrier (Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox, Tongy etc..)

It would be more important for them to take a new tac and develop something really innovative. Something like the SVM-1000, which is really different from anything ever seen before. I don’t think there’s much of a universal market for anything that’s anything like the mk. 3 - especially in this economic climate, no club’s gonna care enough to upgrade them at the understandable cost - especially as most club owners aren’t geeky DJs, and see their current CDJs pulling crowds every night.

I really hope they’re going to surprise us

Hope the price will be reasonable and the gear a real nouveauté

I’m the author of this one, and just to clear out any misunderstandings that might arise, I first and foremost need to state that the picture is nothing more than a “fake”.

Keeping the above in mind, I did take the time to go through all the material there is on the new toy (and thus far, that is not much - JZ’s video and an extreamely dark teaser advertisement) and take a close look to the things Pioneer currently holds in their lineup. I also considered what would make most sense for them to do. My strong belief is that the “new species” might be something not entirely unlike what I came up with - then again, I could be 100% wrong also.

There is a bit more on my blog - in case you’re interested in my reasoning behind the image.

there will not be a follow up on the CDj-1000 … there will certainly be at least 2 new cdj models … “aparently” formats will incresingly be dropped … USB will be the next step as already seen on CDJ-400 … the new species will for sure have at least al the new and distintive feat. of the cdj400… there is some talks of being able to leave your computer at home but still maybe use the new cdjs in familiar DVS style … so “predictably” that means Album art, playlists, etc… I think Pioneer have had they’re own Virtual DJ app (PC only) for some years but never had much luck, so I would think they’ll be looking into making they’re products more and more itunes/ traktor/ serato friendly

For all due purposes this is only hear say … just my 2 cents…

PS - I guess everyone will be much more excited with maybe some future new mixers

PS 2 - Although it looks like Pioneer have been sleeping on guard, all I can say is that they’re very much on cue and forward thinking

Pioneer are bastards!
The more and more we hear about this new species.. the less revolutionary it seems its gonna be - therefore, the more it seems like huge anti climax.

I hope they make toast and crumpets

Looks like they are going to be DVS geared cdj’s with some midi control based on this.

Not to be the voice of opposition, but if you were really truly impressed with something, would you refer to them as “things”? True, he might have been told not to mention the name, but did he really look impressed? I don’t think he did.

have to agree with the anti-climax statement from Belchman
