Who is Chuck? I’m not saying the guy has no talent, but you can’t deny the whole lot of people working on his image and making him the man in front. What was that Mtv gig, a charity event?. Same goes to Guetta (his wife mainly), Tiësto, Armin and the list goes on. They adapted themselves over the years to fit better into the definition of product and reaching a wider public. Don’t pin me as a hater, I like his early stuff but you can’t deny what he has become today and the fact that most of his live acts sound the same, except a little delay/looper here or there.
Skrillex: he’s inexistant on these shores and on most places outside US. The fact he suddenly popped was because Joel took notice of him, like Chris Lake did with the mau5 before. He was in a band before and no one really took notice of him. Talented people need a little push to jump from the underground too.
PS: I wish he learned his (double) lesson and now knows the meaning of “backup plan”
Chuck is a TV show that is pretty popular in both the US and UK. Also Guetta is pretty much trash now. Joel has molded himself to fit the US market but thats about it. His older stuff is great, his newer stuff is good, but his recent releases suggest he is going back to great. Also I thought the definition of a live act was to play your music? How can you change your music for every show. You can’t. The point is to go and hear the music you like.
He is a gear head, I mean look at his opening act. It is a sequence of his mau5 figure running through Mario level and doing a bunch of crazy stuff to the beat of his music. His light show is more than enough to go see him live too.
His buddy Skrillex just played live shows in New Zealand and Australia. He played to a lot of people. He had about the same size crowd as mau5. Plus take a look at the music he did for Mortal Kombat. Anyone who plays that game will hear his music. He is expanding and has not changed who he is.
So it’s a bad thing to reach a wider audience with your music and become popular enough to spin in clubs all around the world and be the house dj for an awards show? And like I said before, Joel usually only plays his own music in his sets so after awhile you’re going to run out of new things to do.
And yea, Skrillex isn’t a global icon the way Deadmau5 or Tiesto or Armin are but that’s because he’s relatively new. Tiesto and Armin were famous just in the Netherlands before they really made it big. I actually used to listen to Sonny’s old band From First To Last back when I had the rock phase of my life and when my best friend introduced me to Skrillex I was surprised that it was Sonny, their frontman.
I have yet to acquire any significant taste for Deadmau5’s stuff. Anything I’ve listened to hasn’t really resonated long-term with me in any meaningful way. I’d say I’m in the minority, though. Any recommendations you guys can give for some of his totally ballin’ ass stuff? Make a believer outta me!
I’ve read a lot of interviews where he has come off as somewhat of a prick, and sometimes I wonder if I go in biased, listening to his tunes, because of this. Who knows?!
Gotta say, Joel (deadmau5) is a bit of a dick but a likable one. Here is a list of what I fell are his best tracks:
Strobe (by far his best)
Faxing Berlin
Arguru
Raise Your Weapon
Moar Ghosts n Stuff
I Remember
Some Chords
Animal Rights
Unspecial Effects
HR 8938 Cephei
That list is incomplete though because there are just too many to put up here.
Hmmm, i thought more stuff off of get scrape would be on there…Can’t say im impressed with his new release, and animal rights definitely seems like wolfgang’s work and not mau5 but that just after listening to alot of wolfgang.
