So this is pretty much the bane of my existance currently. I’ve been trying to think of an artist/DJ name for a while now and I feel that everything I think of is pretty trash. I’d totally be ok with a mediocre name but I’m trying to do music 100% full time and become a brand so I think the name is pretty important.
I’ve tried the silly little name generators which generally come up with horrible names. I have a note book of a bunch of names I’ve written down but none really do it for me. Sometimes I feel like I’m thinking about this too much when I hear of artists like “Musard Pimps” and “Nacho Lovers” blowing up, but then again those artists are only so big.
I’m equally as much a composer/producer as I am DJ so I don’t want an “DJ Xyz” name or whatever.
I’m sure this question has been beat to death but I can’t seem to find any good relevant info. What did you guys do to come up with your names and are you 100% happy with them?
Haha well my last name is Fisher, so my nickname since I was in 1st grade and still to this day is “Fish” but I don’t think it’s gonna work for an artist name personally. I also used Funkfish a bit in college but umm too many smelly vagina connotations haha.
I’m sure most of these big DJ cats aren’t just using their nicknames.
As for the music I do, I do electro/funk/disco kinda stuff.
The name is not important. Tiesto is a stupid name if you clear your head. And think about it , on a clean brain slate, how dumb it sounds if your friend says “The name of my new band is … The Police !” horrible. Everyone hates the police. They "made a name for themselves.
This is the problem I have moaned about on here before - no one can pronounce or spell my name, it wasnever intended to be a ‘DJ Name’ it’s just a forum handle I got lumbered with 14 years ago.
Only remotely PC nicknames I has a school were Taity (surname being Tait) or Lurch because I’m tall … both of which suck.
I use my real first name but spelt in Irish and then shortened, it kinda works but then you get people who don’t know me personally pronouncing the C as a C where it’s actually pronounced as a K! but that’s the fun part lol
either way i have never used DJ just not something i am into.
Hey guys, didnt want to start a new thread for this … but my name is GALO NARANJO, i was wondering what the DJTT community thought about the name gAloVera… or Galoway… any other suggestions im torn on what dj name to use
Galoway sounds like the name of some european explorer who discovered some remote island. I’d prefer galovera.
Regardless, my honest feedback is that it doesn’t sound like a dj name. It’s not that it’s not a cool name, it’s just that it doesn’t make me think about a dj.
DJ names are very passe now a days. I would say pick something that can thrive without the “DJ” in front of it, while able to have it attached for the average groupie.
I was, and am still, on this struggle and am in your in the same position, so I feel your pain!
What I have come up with is this: If you want to actually make it doing music as your main gig, you are going to have to come up with something “hollywood ready”. ^^^Galovera has a nice ring to it. I would dub that hollywood ready. Something like “Mustard Pimps”, while it has that hippster cool factor, will most likely stay underground.
I went with something middle-of-the-road. Not bland, not too flashy, and something kind of separate from my self like an alias, that I can promote and create an image with.
I was using Coop DeVillin, as it has been my nickname since I was a kid, however I just can’t take myself seriously promoting it. People don’t react to it very seriously as well. The name I have decided on is Scott Brio. Scott is my middle name, and Brio means “vibrant” in Italian.
I’m not italian, but I don’t think it matters… to a certain degree, you just have to choose something and stick with it, otherwise you’ll never get anywhere!
All that being said, what have you come up with so far Wonkadonk? And since we’re discussing it… what do you think of Scott Brio? lol
Scott Brio is fine. I guess it just depends on the style of music you’re doing. Sounds very european ala Prog House, Techno.
I thought about using my real name but I want to make a brand that is bigger than myself that people can get really into. Look at Major Lazer!
The name’s I’ve thought of (no stealing! haha)
Don’t Panic (taken, also I think I want a more random/unique name that will go straight to me on google, ala Treasure Fingers)
Barely Broke (guess its a hiphop label, still haven’t ruled this one out)
Radio Sandwich (This one is totally random and will def point to me but I feel like its a little silly and I can probably do better, I was also playing around with “Radio Sandwich and his computer band” lol)
With all that said I definitely agree with Villinus about the importance of the name which is why I’m holding off a bit on picking one. Thanks for making me feel like I’m not crazy haha
edit also Radio Sandwich is diner cook slang for “Tuna Fish Sandwich” and my real life nick name is Fish so I figured it was fitting
