DJTT Ninjas Help needed: Djing illegal tracks in ur mostly purchased set?

I was wondering as an upcoming DJ about djing non purchased music.
The consequences, how u get caught, if they’d even notice, and what would happen if u did get caught.

Thanks DJTT Ninjas

Depends where you live..?

Caught by who?

Nothing would happen, there’s no DJ music piracy enforcement and to my knowledge there has never been a case of a DJ being sued over using pirated music. If there is I would love to read it.

That is a seriously good question. Thought about it myself.

Personally- lots of my library is my friends brothers  but all the edm/rnb/pop I drop at parties is usually purchased, except when I get odd requests. Although- this isn’t the same as a club scene I would assume.

Even though I didn’t purchase the music, it’s all mp3 and mostly 320. So I don’t find anyone notices even If I do play it- unless it’s a ripped edm song, and I haven’t fixed the tags up, or it is terrible quality.

It’s just about conscience really, and whether you contribute to the industry you’re in.

Tragedy of the commons and all that… support producers!

Spend the 99 to 1.99…come man…i used to pay 11 dollars for import single 12 inchers…this is heaven for me…

Wow guys thanks a ton for the info really appreciated and greatly needed.
Back Story * Talked to a local Music store owner and was talking to him about djing equipment and djing etc. and he asked me if i owned all the music i was going to paly saying it only takes one song to get caught which got me thinking about it… then again i should have never listened to a guy who djs from windows media player, he said it himself when i asked “what program do u use when u dj?” “windows media player” … O.O

A bit off topic - But he is using an external mixer and just playing the song as one would of any cd player. If i’m using my friends setup, i generally just use iTunes.

Didn’t Mauro Picotto get busted some years ago, like 2003/2004 in Greece for this?

Amen. Vinyl was super expensive, I love the digital revolution.

This has been brought up countless times. There is no special SVU: DJ Unit going around checking to see if you have the paperwork to back up all that you bought all your tunes. It is understood though that it is the proper thing to do. If your getting paid then the producers of the music you are playing should be also. It’s not that expensive if you think the average controller costs 200-600 dollars and that’s just the middle of the road units. I don’t even want to think about how much money I spend on gear. It’s massive compared to what I spend on tunes, but I do spend the money to buy mine.

If you have a collection of 5k+ tunes what are you going to do with all that? It’s nice to have stuff if someone makes a request but if I wanted to hear people’s requests all day I would goto a place with a jukebox.

Everyone always brings up some story of “did you hear about so and so? They yanked him off stage and told him to produce paperwork for every MP3 on his computer or they were going to kill his grandmother” or some random BS like that. It’s all stories that are perpetuated through the internet.

If you ever want to get paid for doing what you do then do the right thing and give to those that make it possible.

edit: deleted post… didn’t mean to come across so harsh… too much whiskey :stuck_out_tongue:

Depends on where you live.

jail isn’t that bad, don’t worry about it man.

Did i once state i didnt pay for my music… no i was just asking a general question cause of curiousity and general discussion about the question at hand - the point of a forum or so i thought… O.o

Zestio im sorry all ur post and replies are absolutely legendary and blow us newcomers out of the water because ur life has decayed trolling forums like this one so quit flaming and go somewere else

Illinois btw

You are fine in the U.S. No one has ever been sued for DJing with pirated music and it would be difficult to prove if it is or isn’t.

The only way you could get in trouble for pirating music is if you are caught downloading or uploading it through a filesharing client.

I can’t speak for how things work in the rest of the world but if there have been cases of people getting into trouble overseas it would be interesting to read.

a while back i made a massive thread about this topic. you should look it up

yep, its been talked about in LENGTH a few times…

OP please search
