DJTT Tips/Advice - Wedding Music

So I’m a groomsman in a wedding and I was asked by my friend to also DJ the wedding. The thing is, I’ve never been to a wedding before :O. I’m more of a club DJ that plays mostly house music. So I thought why not create a topic that helps everyone out, you never know if you’ll be asked so why not have a step into the right direction.

First and foremost - DO NOT FOLLOW songs listed here to a T. Ask the people who are getting married what kind music they want and do not want.

As I find music and music is suggested (if you post try and post a youtube link also!) I will update this post

The types of music for certain parts of the wedding

Cocktail

Dinner
Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love

Dance Time!
Abba - Dancing Queen

Look up a guy on YouTube, Peter Lee Johnson. He does violin covers of popular songs. I think is appropriate for cocktails. If you donate to him he’ll send you all the covers he’s done.

Good advice, something that is good background music, but people will recognize it.

I ended up doing like 8 weddings this Summer. I created a playlist on Spotify for cocktail hour/dinner music that I would play on shuffle. Feel free to subscribe and use as your own. I try to keep it updated as best as I can.

I got lots of compliments on it.

Also, when I DJ a wedding I tell the couple to download Spotify and start a collaborative playlist with me. They go through and add the songs they want and I go buy the ones I don’t have.

This is also helpful:

I don’t know who those guys are but their playlist is out there for all to see.

This is perfect :open_mouth: because I can’t always be at my table since I am partaking

Well, I think you’ll find the 'Complete 21st century wedding DJ’guide most helpful. It contains playlists and purchase links.

According to former wedding DJ and co-writer/creator of The Office, Stephen Merchant, this is the definitive track to play after dinner is over

that’s all I’ve got, I hate weddings.

Lmfao I don’t know why I find this song so funny

Gangnam Style. =P

this!

funny anecdote: i played this top40 night in a big student club and at 3am (500 drunk peeps on the floor) there is this totally drunk guy coming at me demanding the mic to propose to his drunk gf. i was like: “fuck yeah! this is gonna be awsome!” so he grabs the mic and starts talking but you couldn´t hear him since the crowd was screaming to turn on the music again and whistling and stuff. after they where done. i played that tune and said to that guy: “man, i hope, tomorrow, you and your girl wont remember what happened last and night. be a bid romantic and propose to your girl like a man!”
then i played this tune.

i hope he at last remembered my advice

Loads of wedding classics out there. Look up some other Mobile DJ’s websites and they often have playlists on there that may give you some ideas.
Dolly - 9-5 and Stevie - Superstition never fail.

I can also vouch for Frankie and the Four Seasons as a winner.

Just to hammer the point home, you should probably get on the mic and give a quick synopsis of Ian Curtis’ life. That is sure to get everyone in a festive mood.

No longer have to do dinner/cocktail granted I’m going to have a few songs just incase. Just trying to thing how I’m gonna transition since Its kind of weird going from a pianist to dance mode. Start off low key I guess

this. sweet piano music into this on repeat=best wedding ever

Play “what is love”
Play “what is love”

Lol I’d probably be kicked off immediately. My friend doesn’t want me to play Call Me Maybe but I think its gonna have to happen hahah

word, well if you play call me maybe, you should randomly drop a sick trap tune and get everyone grindin n’ shit. haha

Think when I start out I’m gonna play Back In Time and then drop Rock Around the Clock lol I gotta get the old people dancin!

I’m definitely not going to be a traditional wedding dj lol
