Dubstep Concert w/ Rusko

Dubstep Concert w/ Rusko

A friend of mine talked me into going to a dubstep concert last night, and as the title implies, this concert featured Rusko (as well as Major Lazer, but I couldn’t stick around for him due to work).

I had a great time and really got into the music. The opening acts were pretty cool too, but not nearly as engaging, which comes as little surprise to me.

I have to say, this being my first real encounter with the DubStep genre, the show probably single handedly turned me onto the style. Gritty bass, funky drums, and silly dancing.

tl;dr: I like dubstep now. Recommend me some bands if you’re so inclined.

gah. I meant to go out to see this.

Did sleigh bells open up for them?

Yeah, they were pretty cool. I could have done without the singer-lady screaming, tho.

meh… Its kindof part of their appeal to me. They are a really noisy band, and dont even have any albums out. Their music is really just about trashing things.

As far as dubstep goes, I assume you want UK wobble basically. Check out Rottun Records (vaskit, Datsik, Excision, Downlink, good scary wobble). Dub Police, Southside Dubstars.

Caspa has a really similar sound to Rusko. I’m not a huge fan of ruskos wobble, but I really like how he treats percussion (if you watch his masterclass vids, they are really interesting).

Some other great wobble artists are : Reso, 16bit (they are really eclectic), Borgore, Chasing shadows, Sub Scape, Bar 9.

A personal favorite of mine is Ricorb, but they are quite small.

There is a ton of different flavors of dubstep, but most of those are pretty much along the rusko vein, if not a bit heavier at times.

I thought about going to that show when they stop by Chicago.

As mentioned before, you will probably like Bar 9, and Borgore.

You will probably also love Nero.

tomba, akira kiteshi, rafferti, toast, nosaj thing

+1

british columbia boys running tings

Thanks for the suggestions.Borgore’s pretty sweet, I’ve gotta say.

I love the metal influences in borgores tracks (drum breakdowns are amazing), but other than that his mid synths seem kind of… shallow. I’m not a big fan of the whole robot sound thing either, but when you put it through a big enough system, the bass takes over and you can lose yourself.

Nero is a lot smoother, but I find his songs are dissatisfying sometimes. They seem to lack an emotional “drop”.

Vaski has greattt sci fi sound. 16bit is allllll over the place, from totally disgusting to nice and smooth.

If you want to check out the smooth stuff, look up burial. Its really nice.

There’s also a Dubstep thread here somewhere.

yeah, its really big, and has a lot of good stuff posted, but its pretty far back.

I believe its called “recommend me some dubstep”

Search function should turn it up.

It already did.

when that show came through ATL someone got shot outside, some MCs or something. seriously disappoints me.

favorite dubstep artists atm: caski, underground soundz, coki, sukh knight, kromestar

Yeah… a friend of mine was at the ATL show… he told me about the shooting. Insane. He said the show was great though.

Major Lazer and Rusko are playing in Boston this Sunday. I want to go but I’m a bit of an old man - I’ve gotta work the next day at 7 am. Wish they were playing saturday

If you are looking for some Dubstep check out AC Slaters Attack of the Hams Tour and August 2009 mixes on his myspace page. He has a lot of great Dubstep and some Grime jammed into those mixes.

Hmm, Emalkay is good as is N-Type, Leofah, Distance, Burial (amazing sound that i seldom hear elsewhere), Digital Mystikz, The Others, Matty G, Tes La Rok, Benga.
The Bug (not all Dubstep but I saw him live last summer and it was GREAT! Played Dubstep with Reggae and the MC was good too, all packed into a small bar in Toronto )

I DJ and promote at a club and we got RUSKO playing at our Dubstep night called DROP.

Its a 250 capacity room which is gonna be mental !!!
Wobble Wobble Wobble..

Yups, like sine143 already said.

Excellenté!

Wow! That’s sick mate!

Coki, Skream, Benga, Loefah, Mala, Kromestar, Kode9 etc…

Caspa and Rusko kinda ruined dubstep in a way, just turned it into mainstream party music with a 140 bpm, now every body likes ‘filth’ which is just, well, horid…

sounds like: “mimi it´s my dubstep i dare u everybodies to listen to my music!” no just joking
but i have to say filthy dubstep is what get´s laid on the dance floor…mala, loefah and so are great, awsome. but i interlink those artists with clubs full of dreadlock guys smoking weed and slowly shaking their bodies to the beat. no offense mate
