Hey everyone. I have my first real gig tonight in NYC at White Rabbit with Dubspot. Should be a good time! If anyone doesn’t have plans come on out. I hear it’s normally dead there so I’m trying to push this thing even though I know nobody in NYC. Thanks everyone!
It went really well! Everything got all messed up at the last min. I was supposed to go third and the two DJs before me couldn’t make it as the first DJ actually had an Ableton class at Dubspot and the second guy ended up showing up for his timeslot about 5 min before he was supposed to play. I had gotten there at 7 and since the other DJs said they couldn’t make it they were gonna let me play out that dead air time and my set (should have been about 2 hours) but then the second DJ came in with his posy and got pissed when he saw me on the decks. They told him he could hop on after me. He lied saying he couldn’t make it before 9:30 to try and get a later spot so as far as I’m concerned I could care less. Well they left and he came back an hour later and starts having words. Then he asked to use my S4 I brought from home, my stand, my headphones… He brought nothing but his flash stick. So instead of having a nice middle of the pack spot I got to open. I adapted accordingly and got a lot of people in the doors just walking by. The next two DJs proceeded to clear the place out. I handed out a bunch of business cards so we will see what pops up!
Spark notes: I end up opening, NP. I get a lot of foot traffic in the doors. Throw an awesome set down. The next two DJs proceed to clear the place. Handed out lots of business cards. ???. Profit.
I remember one of my first gigs back in 04/05, I rocked up with my laptop and Stanton Final Scratch 1
The Resident DJ at the club was like WTF is that S#%T u’re not a real DJ using a laptop blah blah blah. (he was kinda well known so it shook me a bit) but…
I ended up blowing tha roof off the place and got a residency there myself after only 1 set. 2 yrs later I was running the whole promotion/DJ’s ended up being there for 5 yrs
The moral of the story is to just focus on the music and job at hand and good things will happen.
Unfortunately in this industry there are ALOT of TOSSBAGS. just forget em
