Funky Breaks Krafty Kuts recommendations

Hi there

Can anyone recommend good resources for finding good funky breaks music?

I like the style that Krafty Kuts and A-skillz play - a bit of breaks, a bit of hip-hop and quite a variation on BPMs.

I use Beatport’s Breaks section, which is ok, but not full of a wide vareity.

I’m not really satisfied with Beatports breaks selection. They really need to split it up better, between the electro breaks sound, and old school funky.

Some good funky artists are:

Fort Knox Five
Ancient Astronauts
All Good Funk Alliance
Skeewiff
Ed Solo
Stanton Warriors (although they are a bit heavier)

Thanks, I know some of those artists and that’s definitely on the right track.

Anyone else got some artists / labels / download sites they recommend?

Add Boca 45 to that list.

I really love this type of music, but unfortunately I’m not horribly versed in it. hopeully that will change in the upcoming months.

i find the broken beat/nu jazz, disco/nu disco and downtempo sections of juno download to be good sources for that kind of thing

Plump DJ’s are always good, they’re a bit more electro breaks but I think you will like. Some proper big bass lines.
DJ Friendly does some wicked stuff with breaks, definitely on the KK/ A-Skills vibe.
Freestylers have that old skool breaks vibe with a bit of a hip hop/ grime flex?
Check out some of the mixes these people have and also check Soundcloud and search the groups for Breakbeat/ breaks, i’m sure you will find something?

Just found this, an oldy but a goody, a mixture of my two recommendations!!

Do a search for ‘DJ Fixx’ on Beatport.com

Have a listen on some of THAT old skool funky breaks action. Check out the Huda Hudia and Fixx action on the Kaleidoscope records.

I guess i’m old-fashioned, but that is what I grew up on…

Sick basslines and nice tight beats.

thanks for all the suggestions peeps

all good ones

found a class link to an a skillz mix which is full of good beats:

anyone more suggestions please post - ideally I’d like to find a different download shop (juno, beatport, djdownload are well known)

trackitdown.net ?

Check out the label Bombstrikes, so many dope choons! They’ve released 16 eps and more to come.

Check out these labels for some funky ass beats known as Nufunk and Booty breaks…Good Groove records, Bombstrikes, Manmade, Fingerlickin, Hot cakes, Booty Breaks, Zone, Illeven Eleven and Punks. That’s all I can think of at the moment but theres a few more.

Check out this site as well http://www.nufunk.co.uk plenty of free LEGAL funky shiznizz on there too.

I’ve got a couple of mixes of this style on the way. I’ll be sure to post them up.

It’s always worthwhile checking out people’s myspace page as their top friends are usually other producers in the scene. And you can listen to their tracks there and then.

Then you click on someone and check out their top friends… you see where im going with this… you discover a lot of good music that way trust me.

Check out Krafty Kuts Myspace for example. A load of producers mentioned here are his top friends:

I was gonna say dj icey and he is one of Krafty Kuts top friend too.

Dj Icey isnt really… funky breaks though. I always saw him as more of a ravey breaks dj/producer

Saw him last november and he killllllled it. Pretty much reopened my eyes to breaks, and I have to say I’ve fallen in love with them all over again.

All these tips make a lot of sense - thanks a lot

I don’t mind veering off Krafty’s style a bit, he usually plays around 120 - 128 bpm but a lot of the a-skillz stuff is around 105 bpm and is really good too.

so , all suggestion welcome

I checked out DJ Yoda last summer, he played mad styles all over the place in a really good way. I can’t really classify that along these lines, but I guess originality and a bit of funk is the key as far as I’m concerned

DJ Yoda is awesome. You can download a load of his mixtapes. Google Fisticuts, Taste of the paste and NUMEROUS AWESOME Essential mixes…

yeah icey is harder for sure… but most of my other suggestions had already been taken

Check out Featurecast! Also Dj Parker. Great Funky breaks styles, keep an eye out for Parkers ‘Where’s my Monkey’ if you’ve not heard it already
