Gonna start Logic Pro X. Which Mac?

Gotta get a new hardware as well since my current 2011 Mac is too slow.

Getting a Mac between:

15" Macbook Pro 2.5GHZ with Intel Core I7 or 27" iMac 5K retina display (3.3GHZ Intel Core i5)

Which should be more convenient for me? I mean would the 15" do perfectly for whatever I need? Which would perform better for the upcoming 5 years though?

Personally I would not go with the retina iMac yet, looks really nice but I’ve heard powering that display takes a lot of resources and often makes the machine feel a bit bogged down.

You will prefer the imac as you will get more real estate to work on and its a nice height on the desk. I am using a 2010 imac and just had the hard drive replaced with an SSD and it is running fast! I think the retina would look nice but not really sure it is worth the extra dollar! I used to have a Macbook Pro and loved it but I was dJ’ing alot so made sense, now I am focussed on production the imac is miles better…

Saw Logic and decided to come in here and derail the thread with - ALCHEMCY! F YEAH!!

I use non retina imac. works great

absolutely!!! Just posted new track on here which was mostly knocked up using Alchmey…no connies required!!

No reason any 2011 Mac should be too slow for Logic so long as you have an SSD installed. My 2010 Imac and 2009 Macbook both agree on this matter

If you think you’ll need the portability, get the Macbook and an external screen / mouse / keyboard

Personally i’d go with the iMac though as a production machine. Not having to lean over a laptop screen while in “makin’ music” mode is a gift from god.

The retina display has been out 3 years and has matured well.. I’m still on the 2012 retina macbook and its as fast as the day I bought it.

It’s quite simply the best laptop device you can buy.. the new surface book is the only contender.

The 5k Imac has 3x the pixels of the Macbook Retina, but a graphics card thats only about 40% faster (on the top end model) to drive them.

I’d expect there to be a little performance hit, but nothing to write home about except with the low end model with the M380.
