Graduating from Controllers to Mixer/Decks

Graduating from Controllers to Mixer/Decks

Hey DJTT

After having my s4 crap out on me too often during live sets, I think I’ve decided to graduate to an actual mixer vs a controller.

I’d love a 4 channel mixer. I think the Pioneer DJMs look good but I’m not sure which one is best for me… and not sure I really need the latest and greatest mixer.

I was thinking of just getting a DJM-750 and two Traktor X1-MK2’s… any advice would be helpful. Also, do I need a separate sound card? I’d be running Traktor of my MBP… not sure how the configuration/setup would go.

The 750 has a built in soundcard, so you would be good to go, and setup is simple enough through Traktor’s control panel (routing everything “externally”). While Pioneer is certainly the standard, I wouldn’t rule out the Xone DB2. It’s amazing, and also has a built in audio interface. It retails for more money, but there are usually quite a few used ones hanging around. Just a thought, because I can’t live without mine. Its awesome.

Pretty sure if you want to use DVS, you’d need a DJM 850 or above as they’re certified for Traktor use, therefore the 750 would need an external sound card for DVS use with Traktor.

And as mentioned, Allen & Heath would be another brand to look at as would the higher end, 4 channel Denon’s. (1600 or 1700 I believe?)

Thing is when you play out you will need an external soundcard. If you just play two decks then an audio 2 will suffice… One stereo channel for each deck. 3 decks an Audio 6, 4 decks then you will want an audio 8 or audio 10 to plug into the club mixer.

For home use a DJM750 will work well with no soundcard and two X1s.

the club I’m at has XLR input receivers… why would I need a sound card if the DJM has XLR outputs?

Except he never mentioned DVS. He said he just wants to use 2 X1s, so the 750 would be fine.

The sound card is for when you use other mixers, rather than bringing your own along every time. If you don’t use DVS the 750 is a good choice.

Thread title mentions decks though.

you’re right. title can be confusing.. but if we really want to be specific, deck a deck b deck c deck d are all pretty common terms. “platter/turn tables” seem to be more in tune with DVS/whatever. but i have no need for platters as I never scratch.

Yeah, I took decks to mean tables and DVS. Regardless, he/she should have the info he/she needs now regardless of what the intention is.

I’m still weighing up if to get turntables/DVS or a pair of CDJ 2000s. Can the Audio 2 be used with Traktor Scratch Pro? And could I also use it with my Mixvibes Cross ?

The Audio 2 gives you 2 stereo outputs for any software, except Serato.

Cheers Makar

The Audio 2 CANNOT be used with Traktor Scratch Pro… ie you can’t use it with DVS or TC CDs. Only NI Audio 4 / 6 /8 / 10 for Traktor Scratch Pro or TSP certified mixer ie DJM 850/900 or Z2.

You can use Audio 2 with Traktor Pro software and controller tho… so like an X1 is fine…

Thing to do is look at the set up examples on each product on NI website

Audio 2 http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/traktor/dj-audio-interfaces/traktor-audio-2-mk2/setup-examples/

Audio 6 [Scratch Certified] http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/traktor/dj-audio-interfaces/traktor-audio-6/overview/details-setup-examples/

Audio 10 [Scratch Certified] http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/traktor/dj-audio-interfaces/traktor-audio-10/

Ah yeh, cheers so much for the clarification on the Audio 2 not possible to use with Scratch Pro 2 (tbh that’s what I had in mind for DVS) - so yeh, looks like I need an Audio 6/TSP, or just stick with my Mixvibes Cross/maybe their soundcard and then save for a Scratch Certified option later on if I want to go that route.

One thing to note with the 750 is that it doesn’t have a separate filter for each channel, which the 800 or 900 do. If using the filters is an integral part of your mixing style, then spending a bit more on the 900 will be worth it!

Mixing with filters is different to using just the eq, if you can try before you buy I’d recommend it!

You could also try a Xone 92 with a sound card if you fancy an analogue mixer, and the sound is superb! However, I’d say that for what you’re trying to achieve a DJM 900 is a better presented solution.

interesting. the s4 has 4 channels each with their own filter knob… i used em every often. maybe i should get that 800…

For real the DJM900 is light years better than the DJM800, sound quality, fx. And is a traktor scratch certified sc… which is nice

If anything get a DJM850. I wouldn’t get a 750 personally

Or a Xone 92 and Audio 6/10

Go 2nd hand on the mixer but not the TSP package cause licensing will be a headache. I got my 900 for less than a grand.

+1 on the 850. Lovely piece of kit.

I’m also interested in going to a setup like threadstarter but more interested in the zone DB2. Is it just a easy to connect the DB2 to tractor then the djm’s? Not working with DVS but just 1 X1 mk2 and maschine for remix decks.
