Help me connecting VCI-400SE to an Ipad

Hi all,

Somehow I can’t get the VCI-400SE working and running, nothing happens when I connect it to my Ipad.
I’m using firmware “VCI400SE MIDI FW v2” and the official Apple Lightning Adaptor.
Other controllers like the Kontrol S2 Mk2 and S4 Mk2 are instantly recognized though.
I see videos on the original 400 running on Ios and mappings for the Mixvibes cross and DJ Player Apps,
so it should be possible right?

Any help here would be appreciated.

You might need a powered USB hub.

The s4 and s2 mk2 are made specifically to run off of ios and an ipad that is why those work. The s4 and s2 mk1 versions are not and do not work the same way. Pretty sure the vci 400 will not either.

I got it to work! VCI-400 and the Kontrol S2+S4 connect differently,
and so I had to go out and buy another Apple cable.

It’s very obvious, but I’m sure this info will be helpful:

  • The Kontrol S2 Mk2 + S4 Mk2 only work on Ios using the supplied 30-pin USB cable + Apple 30-pin to lightning adapter. Traktor DJ’ is the only app that will work for the S2+S4.
Midi controls are not available in other 3rd-party applications.

  • The Vestax VCI-400 SE EGE works great on Ios using a standard USB cable + Apple USB Camera Kit.
A powered USB hub can be added to this setup to make the Ipad charge battery while using.
The VCI works with many other DJ apps, like the ‘DJ Player app’ .

oh wow thats nice does it work with ipads that have ios 7?

Yes it works for sure with ios7,
However the VCI-400 has some firmware issues causing latency but I heard that Vestax is working on it.
(Latency only happens using multi route audio)

VCI-400SE on iPAD sound very interesting. what software do you intend to control beaubryte?
I mean are you working on a mapping/customization in this respect?

I’m doing some experimenting trying to map DJTT devices to various iOS apps.
I tried all the big DJ apps, each has its own strengths and shortcomings, but at the moment the ‘DJ Player’ app would be my choice.
However, there are some iOS7.1<> Vestax issues that need to be solved first before I proceed with the VCI-400 mapping.

Good luck and i am sure you keep us updated.

I remember experiencing intermittent latency issues from start-up when building my DJ Player 5.5 map. A quick restart of the iPad usually worked and was stable as long as I didn’t disconnect the device. A quick test revealed similar latency issues from start-up with iOS 6.1.2 and iOS 7.1, but it could be me:wink:. I’ll update the mapping for the current version of DJ Player and in the next couple of days for you.

beaubryte, I think you’re right - there’s latency issues and Deck C&D mapping issues with the VCI-400SE firmware :disappointed:

Hey Funky,
I found some info regarding this problem on the DJPlayer App forum and it seems that Gabor (Designer/CEO) found the cause:

https://getsatisfaction.com/djplayer/topics/sound_delays_when_playing_from_vestax_vci_400

Thanks for your help though, we should get in touch when things are resolved
Hopefully things get fixed soon..

Fingers crossed…

i fix that problem, finally!

you need to open DJ Player with already connected controller to iOS device and also run any of both midi apps: Midi Monitor or MIDI Wrench (they are Free in AppStore).

while DJ Player is working in background (playing anything from a playlist) i turns different sliders in opened MIDI Wrench app. after that i switching back to DJ Player (both apps is running) and tried to press any buttons, faders and jog wheels which was switched automatically to usual functionality (fast responce, etc…).

maybe its a core-audio bug in iOS program code from version 7.0.6 (when all this happens) till current 7.1, because autoswitch in midi settings wasn’t a problem for my VCI-400 until that.

all i can say about that is: you need to do that thing each time when you wanna spin in DJ Player because if both apps (DJ Player and MIDI Wrench) will be closed and removed from iOS taskbar - all midi settings will be cancelled.

by the way: just tested VCI-400 midi learn function in algoriddim djay2 on iPhone 5. mapping works fine but djay2 app has the same midi responce issue as in DJ Player. problem is resolved in the same way as i described above.

Thanks for sharing this precious info! I’ve been waiting for something like this for weeks!
