How are they doing these mash ups?

Chilly - I’m always down for a booty night…I miss Ghetto Tech!!

Girl Talk uses AudioMulch

seen him twice live and i must say he’s definitely my favorite mash-up artist. puts on amazing shows

87 beat me to it, as he said it’s Audio Mulch.

If I remember correctly it has an interesting layout with different instruments that you can connect by dragging lines between them?

Mucked around with it agesssssssss ago!

Most of the old skool Mashers (called Bootlegs back then) used Acid pro.

Nowadays Dunproofin’, Pilchard and 10000spoons still use Acid Pro 4.0. Go Home Productions and Wax Audio use Cubase. Aggro1 uses Cool Edit pro /Adobe Audition (still). AplusD, Copycat, Hi-brid, Ian Fondue, Soundhog, Lobsterdust and the Illuminoids use Ableton. Dan Mei and Mad Mix Mustang use Traktor. The Who Boys use Sonar.

It’s a while since i’ve done a proper mashup (latest mix for The Illuminoids radio show withstanding) but when i do it’s always in Ableton 6. I’m upgrading to 8 this year.

I’m a bit dubious as to whether Girl Talk actually does use Audio Mulch as much as he says he does. There’s nothing particularly spectacular about his productions that would warrant using AM. Nothing that you couldn’t whip up in Ableton using a bunch of clips.

The Bootie night is awesome. Lobsterdust just had his latest mash featured on the official Smashing pumpkins blog.

If anyone’s in germany - make sure you attend the International Mash Bash Weekender in Saarbrucken - 30 mashup acts over 3 days…

Old School was doing it on two turntables…acapella and instrumental and skill. No software.

heh.

I’m of course using Mashup in the modern sense as in the bastard pop movement - A vs B around 2000 with Richard X, Freelance Hellraiser, Osymyso and co.

But yeah, blends have been around for ages - take Beats international / You got the love etc…

If you want me to to go technical “Old Skool” on your ass then i’ll direct you to The Flying Saucer which was done with tape and a razor blade - 1956! :stuck_out_tongue:

i still use acid 6.

started with acid 2.0 way back when. (2001)

I use MixMeister…err I need to get with the times.

I really dont like the term “Mash-Up” to me its more of a remix or edit.

Mash-Up sounds too hipster to me…sorry if I hurt any hipster dj’s feelings

i don’t make pre-made “mashup” tracks, but I do live mashup blends/mixes using traktor. just gotta use 4 decks and fx, midi controllers are essential.

like someone said earlier the example you showed can be easily done with traktor on the fly … but it can also be programmed in ableton (but that’s not very impressive imo :stuck_out_tongue:)

Yeah, us Brits tend to not like Mash-up either. I think it’s because it sounds like a cross between a Jamaican MC (“mash it up”) talking about mashed potatoes.

For us it’s Bootlegs or Bastard-pop.

I’ve never heard any of your boots corporation - you’re one of the old skool aren’t you?

Haha - Depends what you do with it really. Horses for courses. But saying it like that is a bit like saying using Traktor isn’t as impressive as using Real Vinyl.

+1

yeah pretty much… because of work now, i just pop into GYBO every now and then…

my myspace page has my entire discography for your listening pleasure.

You will be able to make good mashups as long as you have the samples beats or songs, and The Maschine is a perfect tool for you to DO THIS!! : 0

PEACE"

Ahh MixMeister ain’t too bad man, I use it to quickly get a rough idea of the structure/phrasing of mixes I have in my head before recording them in Traktor. It’s also handy for doing really quick layering jobs and fast paced mixes a la Radio 1’s MiniMixes.

But don’t ever try and use it live!

Never it used it live, I have used it to make my mixed cd’s I use as giveaways. You can make a 80 min cd in 15 - 20 mins

hey guys just had another thought as I was listening to the link I originally posted. When your using samples do you want them to match the bpm of your beat. Let’s say I had a beat going at 120 BPM would I want my acapella samples to be about the same BPM as well. Also on strictlyhits.com I was listening to songs where they do transitions from like 120BPM to 90BPM, could someone explain the technique behind these transitions. I really like the idea of bringing in a track that way. To me it’s almost stealth. People realize the music is changing, they have no idea whats coming next, then boom you drop it right on their heads and they didn’t have a clue haha.

If you have noticed the tracks are exactly by 3/4 of the original speed - thats the key to making is sound musical instead of just a horrible drastic tempo change. Its quite a interesting technique actually  An example of this is that there are some dnb tracks floating around that one moment its 176 BPM dnb and the next moment its 132 BPM electro house - you can use this same technique while your mixing as long as you trigger the 132BPM track at the right time.

Would you wanna throw it on a 1?

Yeah you need to let the track play on the 1st beat of a bar on time with the faster track - preferably when there isnt a whole lot going on with the faster track. If you have the faster track and the slower one playing at the same time this doesnt work if the faster track has rythmic material playing - you need to do a quick cut or atleast be mixing into a part of the faster track where you cant hear anything rythmic.

Study these mixes and tracks that use this technique and you will soon nut it out for yourself. It actually helps to try to beatgrid one of these songs as it will give you a good idea about how you can perform the technique for yourself.
