Just a general question. How long did it take for you to go from your bedroom to the rocking the dance floor? I’m guessing many probably started DJing at house parties first then moved up from there. How was your first club gig and is there something you wish you had done or practiced more of prior?
I think a usual time is about 4-12 months, however for some people they do their first gig after only djing for a short while because they know people.
I’ve got a MacBook Pro and a Novation Nocturn that I use with Ableton Live… I’m looking for a VCI-100 at the moment but seem to keep getting outbid on eBay. Do you currently DJ at clubs where you’re from?
I started djing in the mid 80’s when i got my 1210’s at 15, I was playing house parties and the odd club by the age of 19 and the music was truly taking off, then i retired at 25 more for the fact I had to make the decision job or dj! i chose wisely for the time, luckily now I can enjoy the music mix and produce without any real hassle..
your best bet is to practise practise and practise more, and get yourself out there best of luck!
i’m just a beginner as well, but what i’ve found is helping me get some gigs, is just letting friends and people know that i’m starting to djay, i’ve already had quite a few friends looking at having me djay for the cheap buck at their house parties or rez dances. and I am honestly a pure beginner much like yourself. I imagine in time it’ll come, and plus it can also be really fun doing the house party scene since, nobody is really there to listen to music haha, everyone is piss-dunk so i take the opportunity to just practice some stuff and see if i get any reactions (even if their drunk)
well, i’ve been at it for a little more than a year now. my first gig was 5 months after. i’ve been playing bars and things like that. i have my first club coming soon, march 5 =D. but thats just in the TX edm scene. our scene is dominated by two people lol so its a little harder to break in
i just kept practicing till i thought i was good enough to play at a club, i think i gave it a year just taking my time on and off, and i would always listen to how other djs mixed, i noticed i could easily do what most dj’s were doing at the clubs so i decided to go hard out and now its easy as pie and im more then confident.
I was also quite hard on my self like i would keep trying transitions and different ways of mixing tracks and doing things until i was really happy with how it sounded, if i wasnt happy with how it sounded id keep practicing, i also wanted to sound different to how all the other dj’s mixed so i made it a goal to mix in different styles, now i have played quite a few times at clubs and gigs now and get lots of props and compliments for the different way i mix my sets really happy with how i did it
End of the day its practice and hard work and your confidence in your self with which you pretty much decided on your own if you think your ready to play clubs and gigs.
I’d say that about the time you take a long road trip with your friends and they discover you have been controlling the iPod with a considerate flow and attention to the mood in the car for the past three hours.
You mention that you’ve been learning to mix in your spare time, and one of them invites you to play his upcoming birthday party.
I did a short set in a bar about 6 years ago (no practice), people liked what they heard and I was playing in nightclub down the road after a few weeks.
I’ve never really been a bedroom dj, always been well into my music and kinda got an ear for what will work well and just messed about with stuff on the fly
I’ve just given up my 6 year residency though for other work commitments, it’s a sad day
