So just out of interest, other than the HP envy and sony vio, what other window based laptops do people recommend? I’ve heard good things about IBM thinkpads, I used to have one and there pretty much indestructible.
Samsung netbook, since traktor 2 never had audio glitches, its perfect size for a dj laptop for 2 deck mixing because you can kind of hide it out of the way
I recomend Dell Alienware . they are sturdy and highends can have SSDs built in
well im running on vaio and i haz been on past 2 models as well.. my gf dj runs on vaiio… they are fine, though their trafo unit (power charger) sucks so bad. their hum is out of this world… better to get different one before trying to solve ground loop.
Thinkpads are solid laptops. And if you can afford it, Rain laptops are great.
Technically it does matter, but only in one way.
OSX has CoreAudio, which makes it very easy to do stable, low-latency audio drivers.
Windows (even Win 7) doesn’t have anything equivalent, so manufacturers of audio gear have to work harder for less consistent results.
(Much the same is true of MIDI, but MIDI is less prone to going wrong than audio).
Everything else is a matter of preference. Apples happen to have industrial design that’s very good for DJing (lightweight, metal enclosures, backlit keys, etc) but other OEMs produce similarly suited machines.
Windows here, but why go for Mac when Windows works on par with a Mac and is cheaper?
PLEASE don’t start talking to about MAC vs PC but I’ve run a Mac & PC side-by-side using Traktor and I really haven’t noticed any difference. Only a slight loading time on tracks but that’s nothing. Both laptops were using NI soundcards so it was a fair test. Couldn’t hear much, if at all any difference.
Dose it really matter though? Just matters how well you can use it and play a good set! ![]()
I set my soundcard at 5.9ms and that seems to work fine for me. Try not to set anything over about 10ms because then you start to notice the delay
Mac here.
Coming from a HP Envy, found a reduction in latency and an increase in stability.
Easier to manage MIDI within OS X than Windows 7.
Had my MBP 17" open on the couch handle just last night, got up and watched it fall lid-first on the power adaptor. Nice dent in side of the lid. Put it against my knee and straightened it out: good as new.
No other laptop I own would have (or, err, has) survived something like that without some permanent niggle.
That said, Sony VAIO and IBM ThinkPad machines are suh-weet.
Mac here..
I’v came from a Windows based background since Windows 95 and when i started Graphic Design a few years ago i did the switch and to be honest I had to sit for months trying to get Traktor to work on my Desktop and Laptop and even at one point it was playing music in reverse. Purchased a Macbook (since upgraded to another Macbook and also an iMac) and plug and play.
Keyboard shortcuts etc are so much easier, navigating my way round Mac OS is easier also. Just feels so much better.
Also for the record my windows based desktop and laptop was high spec at the time.
LINUX!!! haha
i also use windows too. i was able to get ableton running on linux FTW
I use an Asus i5 laptop from last year - work well enough , though I have to turn wireless and ACPI battery monitoring off to avoid pops in the audio,
Always used windows OS. To be fair to win 7 the audio side of things is vastly improved and I’ve never had any issues with any of my audio gear.
I think macs are nice and all but WAY overpriced for what they are. For that reason I use windows(and it helps that I get all the software for free as part of work agreement!!)
This, although I’ve been surprised at how many people I’ve seen running it windowed+maximized (both here and while trainspotting in clubs).
And back on topic, I think James Holden and Kerri Chandler have to be the only big names I’ve seen DJing with windows laptops (two of them at the same time for KC).
Isn’t ASIO native to mac? If so - I would say that would be one bonafide advantage mac has for DJing.
Another benefit is that you don’t have multitudes of different hardware configurations that may behave differently with the software.
:shrugs:
A couple Windows pluses…
*Win7 seems uber stable now.
*You can build a pretty wicked machine for a good price
No, it’s for Windows. OSX doesn’t need it because CoreAudio is an incorporated API. You’ve got it backwards.
Word thanks. Seems like a great, legit mac benefit imho.
Fuck yeah linux! except I can’t fucking work out how to get tf2 and diablo 2 working on my desktop. Oh well I guess I’ll make use of the windows 7 licence I have as soon as I can find an install DVD.
used windows for years the got a macbook. cant believe i didn’t switch sooner.
