I’ve noticed from reading twitter, going to gigs and watching videos of sets that, of the DJs that use laptops, all of them seem to use macbooks.
I’ve also noticed that some people on here, myself included use windows (for whatever reasons, financial or otherwise). Are there any ‘big name’ DJs that use windows? Or do they all use macs?
Flux Pavillion switched to an HP Envy Beats a few months ago, otherwise, I don’t know anyone else (Girl Talk uses a panasonic toughbook, if that counts)
Does it really matter?
I mean, maybe to some degree. But ultimately I believe (after having used both) that it comes down to aesthetics and the group think culture that can drive niche markets.
BTW I use a PC…HP ENVY to be precise
I think the MacBook usage is an artistic thing. Macs always had better industrial design and promoted a “counter culture” artistic vibe. It helped that the entire adobe software suite used to be designed for Mac only use.
I love te MacBook design and if I had the money I’d probably buy one, but widows and my pc works just fine for me and I like my lenovo and think it looks pretty cool. macs are just out of my price range ATM for the specs I want.
I use a netbook with xp at the moment but soon getting an illuminous green sony vaio with windows 7, think that beast will stand out more then a little glowing apple, like the green case looks like its backlit even though it isnt, looks really nice!
I personally have never noticed a difference in how it works. When Mustard Pimp played in ventura last year, they were on windows 7 because their mac was getting repaired or something
I own both Apple and PC. I have an Asus gaming laptop running Win7, but I use the MBP most because I get lower latency on it with my sound card. Either one works with my setup, so it’s nice to have one as a backup.
The MBP gives me ~2ms of latency but the PC gives me ~15ms.
When we were working on some live stuff a while ago we tried 3 different pc’s and had alot of stability issues, switched to mac and boom everything worked without one single problem from the word Go! I have to say it was some pretty advanced stuff not just traktor, would have torn my hair out if I hadn’t borrowed a mac to try. At the end of the day it will always be preference and what works for the individual
to answer your question… I DONT KNOW, but most local djs i see use window laptops…
im a new MBP user and there is lots of everyday stuff i cant do with my mac that is so easy to do on a pc but when it comes to running the s4 and traktor pro 2, the mac beats my laptop hands down but then again the mac is also better spec.
but there are some little touch’s that i love with the MBP, like the back lit keyboard, and the way it feels solid, the way the power lead is magnetic rather than a plug in connection like laptops
(ive damaged at least 3 laptops over the years by catching the wire of something or tripping over it and it pulls out from the laptop and then having to twiddle the connecter to get power again because its been broken)
also another thing i love is, even after the mac been on for days on end it never seems to get hot, most laptops get hot after a half an hour or so, not the mac, not even if its been sitting on your knee while youve been sitting in bed and covered in a big thick duvet cover. that kinda thing chokes the hell out of a laptop because of blocking the fan air vent holes etc…
just my 2 cents…
ps. i aint no mac fan boy, i love my PCs for everyday stuff, but for DJing i bought a mac due to what everyone said on here… MACS JUST WORK and its true, they do.
oh and one thing i hate about my mac is iTUNES i hate it, i think its gay, maybe because i cant work it right or something, but i never did like iTUNES.
oh and the lack of USB connecters is a bit of a bummer considering the price ya pay for a mac
