i have a question for you people that like to put labels on things…

so as i peruse the beatport…i noticed that there are alot of tracks that are now being labeled as “indie dance/nu disco” that are obviously electro…what is going on?

like this track…

https://www.beatport.com/en-US/html/content/release/detail/366128/firedog-kids-want-noise

or am i trippin?

From pool to pool, the same track can be classified in different genre… who’s right?!?

Genre and Sub-Genre is always tricky to discuss. However, it’s down to you to decide if it fit the “suggested” genre. That one has Electro + dubstep clips here and there… how do you call that?!?

Find yourself a way to find, classify your track, so they’re easy to find/match. You can call it the way you want, as long as you stick to your own method.

the same thing happened with “progressive house”

i know what i like when i hear it…no matter what it’s labeled as…techno, tech house, house..whatever…

it seems as though people are trying hard to cross label tracks for more exposure…

i wonder how beatport does it?..or does the artist get to decide what it’s genre or sub-genre is?..

(this is a discussion…this is no way intended to start a fight with anyone for any reason what so ever…i know some of you know it alls have out of control lately)

aren’t they trying to start another form of dubstep?..like friggin fidget house also…

last year i read of an argument between anthony rother and beatport. he labeled a track as minimal and beatport changed it into tech house.

so i guess artists/labels label tracks them selves and beatport decides if they accept it.

but yea labeling tracks is a science, nearly every artist creates their sub-genre.

I find beatport particularly annoying as their idea of genre differs from mine. Take the above example Nu Disco / Indie Dance.

Deep House
Disco
Nu Disco

Indie Dance
Nu Rave
Electro House

The ========= is a gaping chasm that exists in my head between Nu Disco and Indie Dance.

That’s why I use Juno Download instead.

you’re right, that is most definitely not nu-disco.

without a doubt it’s electrohouse, no mistaking it. fuckin beatport

And isnt it all (for the most part) indie dance?

dang it! seconds ago, I just posted about kinda the same thing. In answer to your question, I don’t think it sounds like Nu Disco to me. It sounds like electro… or is it electro house…

lol yeah somewhere along the lines electrohouse jacked the “electro” name from the original electro… which i suppose people now call oldschool hiphop?

silliness.

I would call that indie dance personally, i tend to label electro that feels as though its got a rock influence (eg artists like justice) as indie dance.

Electro is always closer to a house vibe for me.

I dont see why Beatport doesn’t split indie dance and nu disco into seperate genres! Nu disco for me has a very distinct sound (ie louis la roche etc)

so then explain to me what indie dance is…cause it really sounds like electro to me…

we are splitting hairs now…

i dont play electro or electro house…i dabbled in a touch of it before it got all out of control…

I have always called indie dance stuff that’s indie, but has a more danceable beat to it. nu disco is inde dance that’s more like disco, but not like 70’s disco, just more of a straight up dance song.

Not even remotely similar

Honestly my idea of what indie dance is, is pretty certain and same with Nu Disco, but then again i might just be confused??? Theres so many miss labeling in these genres its so hard to tell now what the actual sound for the genre’s are…

Heres what i think the sound for these genres are:

Indie Dance:
Black Kids - I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You (The Twelves Remix)

Cut Copy - Hearts on Fire

Nu Disco:
Fear of Tigers - Sirkka (Mille Remix)

FrankMusik - Confusion Girl (Russ Chimes Remix)

I guess you can say they are linked in the same way that New Wave followed Old Disco.

But you’d never get someone to admit liking both.

i like both hahaha :stuck_out_tongue:

maybe you just hit it on the head…

bad connotations of genres…

“we don’t want to be associated with them…even though we were heavily influenced by them…our thing is newer(and not necessarily) better”

like all the gated communities and subdivisions now…

I came across a genre called electronic indie never heard that one before. I liked the track so it doesnt really matter. Its just harder to distinguish what your actually into nowadays with all these unusual labels.

IMO, I think its part artist and part beatport (in this case)… Im sure that the artist are trying to push into a less crowded end of the genres/market, or even make yet another sub-genre. A lot of the big names are releasing electro so why categorize yourself against them? Also with EDM evolving at the rate it is now a days, “nu-disco/indie” could be the next big thing. But who will know the difference, only the ones who care too (aka DJTT ).
