I’m Now Officially A Proud Member Of The Macbook Pro Family!!!
Hey guys so after alot of saving and patience I finally bought my new MBP yesterday! I’m so super stoked cos I’ve been waiting for this machine for ages!
I picked up the new 15" i7 2.00Ghz Quad Core 4GB 500HDD. This thing is a beast so far and I’m loving it! I’ve been playing around with it a little bit, and it will take some getting used to I think, but so far so good! I moved from a Hp dv7 17" which was ok but this is MUCH better IMO.
What I would like to ask all you guys out there with MBP’s, what can I do to really tweak my new MBP to make it tip top for Djing? Do you have any suggestions or recommendations about any programs to install to keep it optimized and running smooth and perfectly? Thanks in advance guys!
Awesome-idk what u were running before, but a MBP changed my life. I haven’t customized anything on mine, + I luv it. However, I think I will investigate some of the links/advice on this thread…
Chrome is good, actually GREAT. Note that Flash is crashing, but if on Chrome, there’s a built-in task manager and you can kill it without fucking up the loaded pages themselves. Refresh the page and it will reload the flash player.
As for general apps, I could suggest:
iStatMenu to see the nice resource usage stats in the menu - CPU, net, disk, ram, temperature. The newest version is paid (&cheap), but the older 2.0 is free
Xee for picture viewing in parallel to iPhoto
UnRarX to take care of Rar archives
VLC for media player
Transmission for torrents
iSoul for Soulseek client
MacPorts for command line utilities and other general linux/unix applications. requires XCode, available on the install DVD
AppZapper for Unistalling software
Adium for Instant Messaging client
If you require Windows applications, you can use:
a) WINE - the windows emulator (free)- i’m using foobar2000.exe with WINE and that’s my preferred Audio player under OS X.
b) Parallels - my choice for virtualization. Windows7 64biit works great with Parallels. I’m using the coherence mode, which skins the Windows apps as OS X apps and it’s great.
c) VMWare fusion - the other mainstream VM for OS X. can send you a discount coupon to get it for $39.99
d) VirtualBox - free VM. not as good on the cosmetics side, but a good way for running windows.
MS Office for Mac is OK (have bugs, but works)
I will also suggest you to review the apps in Applications > Utilities. Many important system maintenance apps are there by defualt. Get familiar with what is available there, as there are handy tools
Wow, thanks for all the info and tips, I’ll check them out for sure!
I’m really wondering why youtube wont load up. I would think that being on a Mac, youtube should load up fine? It says that a plug in is missing? I downloaded a program called mactubes but it still wont show embed youtube vids.
