Is Firewire 400 Dead?
Hey, I am currently looking to upgrade past the USB sound card and go Firewire. The only issue is that i’m maxin’ out an iBook G4 and the only Firewire port is the 400, not the current 800. Does anyone know of a decent sound card in the $200 range that uses a Firewire 400 connection, and RCA outs.
an adapter wont work? i use it the other way round, but thats probably easier!
I didn’t know if it would dramatically effect the latency, not power the sound card, or just not be compatible with a downgraded machine. But will it work?
firebox, its in the tags lol. do a search if you haven’t heard of it.
i don’t think you’ll run into many (if any cards yet) that are FW 800 or FW 800 only.
Buy a Presonus Firebox and be happy ever after. Seriously
it has Firewire 400 connections 6 pin). So has your iBook.

An 800 to 400 adapter won’t effect latency at all.
those firewire 400 cables fall out sooooooooo easy, its horrible >_<

The 6-circuit like the Presonus are fine. Its the 4-circuit alpha that fall out.
Bad design.
Im hoping that the 9-circuit is more sturdy as thats what is in the new Macbook Pros and im due an upgrade.

if you’re getting a firebox (which I fully reccommend), do yourself a favor and get a firewire cable from apple. they will click-lock into your port, the one that came with my firebox was quite loose

Ive given the exact same advice on the NI forum .
Those Apple cables are unbelievably secure. The one you get with the Firebox was thrown in the spares box immediately.

So does the Presonus has an RCA out? If so I think I’m sold
i can very much recommend the audiofire series by echo. running the audiofire2 on my macbook using a 400 to 800 firewire adapter. no latency issues!
it does balanced or unbalanced 1/4" outs, which you can get a adapters to RCA.
FYI they are mono 1/4 outs.
You can get 1/4" Jack to RCA leads. No need for adapters.
This is just an example i found on google. I dont use Monster cables i think they are a USA thang.
