I’ve bought all my Macs refurb.
What about Macbook Air? Is it safe for the stage?
Is there any reason to prefer a similarly-speced Macbook Pro over it?
They do not have similar specs.
Ah, I see. mainly the processors, optical drive. Thanks.

i used to only ever use thinkpads, loved them, but the build quality of my late 2011 13" macbook pro is a step up. i’m sure u can get a windows laptop as well built as a macbook but it’s going to cost around the same money anyway.
personally i’ve never liked windows, have always run linux whenever possible, but love mac osx. it’s just so “simple” at the cost of being not so user customisable. better gui than windows imho and i can run a bash shell and do the same kind of geeky stuff i do in linux.
i had been running traktor on windows 7 for about a year with not too many issues tho - apart from high cpu loads sometimes, but my win/lin laptop is an older acer, dual core 2.2GHz jobbie.
if my career depended on having a reliable platform to run music software then i’d have to just go with mac osx i think (given that most of the software won’t run on linux which is about as stable tho)
God, I hoped people here already forgot about me bringing up that comparison to explain at the other mac vs pc topic, concerning the war it started last time…![]()
Hey Sublim&All, how is the Macbook Air working for you? is it powerful enough for DJ software and is it sturdy enough for the stage?
I use a 4 year old 1.6 c2d dell vostro 12" with windows 7 and an early 2011 macbook pro. They both do fine
I didn’t do many gigs with it yet (too busy with university these days
) but I can say nothing but good words about it. I totally fell in love with it and I always have it with me now (for study purposes and everything). It is by far powerful enough to run DJ software, and with its unibody casing just as sturdy, if not better than a MBPro. It may look more fragile, but it certainly doesn’t feel like that.
I did encounter a few hiccups at the latest gig, but that was at running a latency of 1ms in ITCH while not having it properly placed (it was standing on some cloth so it couldn’t get rid of its heat properly), so you could say it could be prevented. I guess any (Mac) computer would get a bit overheated in that situation.
Biggest advantage over a 13" MBPro DJing-wise must be the higher resolution (1440x900). The screen is absolutely gorgeous and thanks to the higher resolution the DJ software doesn’t get cramped on your screen. It all gets a bit smaller though, but it’s all still easily readable.
Thanks so much ![]()
