I think it’s LONG overdue and could be a major reason to hold off on buying any DVS if it’s true.
I would expect Rane/Native Instruments to create their own soundcard for the iPad then either have the app as a free download (Rane) or as a paid download (NI).
no, then your gonna have people downloading it and tell you they dj. people at my work know i dj and they always come up to me and show me those stupid iphone dj apps like djay, baby scratch, etc.
they only way i see the power issue being handled is by hooking the iPad to a Rane 57/68 USB and it powering the iPad as well. I would love to have a 64gb iPad with serato.
I can’t imagine prepping tracks on an iPad. The iPad 2 was a lot better than the iPad 1 or my iPhone (or my old 3g or my girlfriend’s 4s…we’re all apple whores in this neck of the woods)…………but it’s still just not precise enough.
not to start a serato vs traktor war. but I think SSL would run smoother on a iPad that traktor. keep in mind that SSL core function is to play two mp3s at once while staying in time with the timecode.
upgrade to SSD!!! … i have a 120ssd for all my music(mostly the music i play) and then a 750gb optibay for every thing else… the most you can get with the ipad is 64
The 1 Ghz Dual Core A5 in an iPad2 doesn’t meet the specs for either Traktor or Serato They both need Intel Chips. And the A5 chip more than likely doesn’t have the necessary power either with just 1GHz. Plus, the iPad works with iOS. Both Softwares need OSX. I can’t imagine either porting their software over to iOS. So, keep dreaming.
I’d say any kind of dj app for from NI or Serato would be about 0% shot. I would hope they have someone working on a track organizer or something similar to prep tracks. I’m currently in the process of learning iPad programming just to create a program that will show me my library and all the relevant information and an easy way to sort it all but I doubt I would actually release it on the app store though. I just wish I had a polished product that integrated with Traktor.
I did read an article in Future Music from a Berlin producer/dj that made comments about his work with NI on Traktor’s Loop functionality to make it more useable like Ableton. Obviously he couldn’t go into any real detail but it’s nice to hear that they are getting feedback from the user base and working on implementing them into Traktor. I just wish they’d leverage the iPad/iPhone more instead of running from it like the plague.
@jsa, we have the same SSD. I love mine too. Have you brought yours in for service with the optibay in? Did they bat an eye? My SuperDrive is dead and I want to replace it with another SSD…but I can’t get a straight answer out of anyone at AppleCare as to whether it voids the warranty or not.
EDIT: I lied. Mine’s a Mercury Extreme, not Electra.
@scamo, they might have to eventually anyway. There are rumors that Apple is going to ditch Intel within the next couple years because the’re reaching the limits of what they can do with the Core series without absolutely ridiculous temperatures. Remember when the last PowerMac G5s were water-cooled before the Intel switch…yeah…it’s getting about to that point. And there’s much more promising stuff coming out of ARM chip development than x86.
I mean…it’s a year or two off at least, but when the Intel Mac Pros start coming with water cooling, it’ll signal the end of Apple+Intel and everyone will have to catch up…I–for one–would ditch NI long before Apple.
@bartboy, why would they want to make it more like Ableton? Traktor’s on-the-fly looping is just about the only thing that I can conclusively say is just plain better than the way Ableton does it.
@mostapha - um, Apple just changed over to Intel CPUs about 6 years ago. They aren’t going to be changing to another CPU vendor anytime soon, as that would be an enormous cost factor and I am sure Intel will keep up the power in order to make Apple happy, much better than ARM or IBM/ Motorola could ever do.
SSL can run on a 1ghz, if it ran on a 400 mhz G4. BTW a company that swore it would never make a port to the mac world was FL-Studio and they have a iOS app.
Um, in general, an iOS App for an iPad is usually another completely different animal compared to it’s full-fledged MAC or PC sibling. It’s more like a “light” version and I personally can’t fathom seeing any professional DJs wanting a light version of their favorite DJ software for doing gigs with just an iPad. So, if there were some sort of port of the software to iOS, it will be more like a toy. And as others have mentioned, turning knobs on an iPad is a bitch.
