Looking for speaker stands… or something

I want to get my Acoustic Energy AE22 monitors up to nearer head height. Right now they’re just sitting on the table which means shoddy sound quality when mixing.

The AE22s are designed to be placed on top of a studio mixing desk when you’re sitting down, but I don’t have one of those and I don’t want to sit down! So I want to find a pair of stands.

I thought it would be easy to find speaker stands high enough but I can’t find anything higher than 50cm apart from the little spindly ones designed for home cinema systems, and these things weigh 10kg each and have a 30cm x 35cm footprint. They don’t have a top hat fitting or anything.

So any ideas people? Even an Ikea hack or anything? Unfortunately wall mounting isn’t an option.

Thanks everyone!

I was in a hurry and got On-Stage SMS6000s cheaply.

  • work
  • adjustable (big plus in my case as I wanted to set a specific height)
  • somewhat ugly but hey
  • suspect these won’t last multiple teardowns and setups

You could also take a look at RaXXess ERS36, could fill the inside with sand with those.

Whatever you do, the best is to measure the room acoustics. When I moved my reference monitors from desk to stand, I got a better mid to high range (tigher), but a dip in the 200Hz. Means I need to fix a bass trap at some point. But to do this properly, the measurement, you need a tool like FuzzMeasure Pro 3.

Here is a good, affordable solution:

I’ve also got the SMS6000s, they work pretty well. I even have an extra pair that came for free with my last monitor purchase that I really have no use for, but I suspect the shipping cost across the pond would likely be beyond the cost of the stands.

SMS6000s rebranded. You could get them cheaper if you look around.

cinder blocks!!! i’ll try and attach some pics but basically they are:

  • cheap
  • stable
  • good for bass

the negative is they are a pain in the ass to move around.

here is a pic.

This might be something that would best be home-made / modded. I’m sure you could adapt some PVC pipe into some decent stands, or make something out of wood pretty inexpensively.
