Macbook Air - Do you recommend it to DJ:s?

Would you recommend this for DJ:s?

Macbook Air 13"
1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
128GB Flash Storage

The storage ain’t so large, but hey, I could use a external harddrive!

/ O

Well, in general Airs are quite good piece of gear (extremely light, portable, not a bad performance) however it depends for what you’re using it. In my opinion for DJs it’s not a good choice. Mainly because it has only 2 usbs. Yes, other MacBooks have also only 2 usbs but they have firewire which is perfect for the external drive connection  And believe me, if you want to be portable with your Air you don’t want to mess around with an external drive. It’s always better to have everything in one piece.

try getting one with faster processor even u get lesser ram.

Nah I don’t recommend it:

  1. Outdated CPU: it’ll probably still do for now, but it’s not future proof at all, and imo too slow to be reliable for gigging.
  2. It’s not bad build quality, but I doubt it’s sturdy either, I’d go for something more durable.
  3. USB ports as mentioned above

I agree. T2 requirements are not very precise (Intel® Core™ Duo, 2 GB RAM), however you know already that your Air with 1.86GHz is not the fastest Core Duo processor. What is more, in general Core Duo are outdated on the market there are already 2 newer families of processors from Intel (i series and sandybridges).

Why don’t go for a 13" MacBook Pro?

From a portability standpoint, the 11’ is tasty and would have ample Juice for DJ’ing (1.6 & 128SSD, 4gb RAM) but if you are going 13’ get a MBP instead, you wont regret it.

Erm…no.

Traktor 2 is far more processor intensive than anything else, so being .8 ghz below minimum system requirements to really gonna hurt performance.

@Oskars: Just get the 13 inch mbp. Your getting better performance with a system that is still pretty damn sleek by anyone’s standards.

There is other DJ software out there

But yeah the 13’ MBP would be my choice too

Just out of a matter of interest why are you even thinking about getting an air over a 13inch model?? The pricing isnt much different.

Heh, you are right mate. It’s called a brain wash

I gig with Traktor Pro on a 2.0ghz C2D processor; does me fine

I use Virtual Dj Limited Edition and a Hercules Mk4 (First Controller that I could find and recommended by you guys for Beginners) package for £180, with a Packardbell 4gb proccessor(I cant tell you the specs, in school right now) , and on this site I feel like a black sheep to everyone on this site because of the overall dominance of the Tracktor software/controller. So any other software seems stupid to me, espically my own Virtual Dj, for talking about on this site

Go for the 13" MBP and do an SSD mod. Or don’t do an SSD mod, but still go for the MBP!
