mixing/controllerism jam session over the internet
i was thinking about how cool it would be to jam with other people through the internet.
all we need is some kind of server based traktor version and everything is fine
but at this point we dont have something like that
maybe its possible to do that anyway
my idea is to stream the audio output from one computer and use it as the input on another.i also know that traktor has some streaming options wich has something to do with icecast softwareâŚyes,as you can read i m a totally noob when it comes to the technical point.
what about a ânetwork mixing tutorial for dummysâ ? (at least for just mixing )
I suppose there could be some kinda post people could post that they are mixing live or something with an ip to an icecast server they are jamming it out on. It should even be possible for Icecast to work for users using Traktor routed though Ableton . Installing the dedicated icecast software and not using the inbuilt icecast software in Traktor.
Icecast download link
This would be the post practical and easy to implement way in my opinion without eating into djtechtools.com bandwidth
I know i would not mind hearing some people mix it up this way, though exposing your ip on the boards is kind of a security riskâŚ
As an alternative, though, a sticky can be put up for people who want to connect and whoever hosts gets sends out the IP address for all who want to connect. It wouldnât need to just be posted on the board.
these are very interesting ideas though. We have members from around the world so it would be rad to have different people signed up to spin around the clock!
Having some kinda voice chat server would be pretty badarse. We could rewire out audio outs to our audio ins so we can loopback what we are hearing while we mix into the chat room.
Also that way people can just log on and start mixing. While the listeners can pick and choose who they want to listen to as we all chat in a chatroom kinda like the yahoo chatrooms but with better audio quality Webcam support would be neat too so we can watch people as they mix too.
This also gives an opportunity for new people to come in and mix as opposed to only a handfull of controllerist vets. The whole show would basicly run itself, if a handfull of users (forum moderators?) were given privlidged access aka Ops, to kick\ban people causing havoc according to a predetermined set of rules.
Though an official radio would be cool too, im just throwing some options around.
I went and had a look at that stickam.com site and it looks pretty neat actually, it could quite possibly be what we are after.
The Audio quality is pretty decent, the webcam quality is looks alright too, its free and its possible to load the player onto other sites (like perhaps the a djtechtools page, users myspaces and generally wherever anyone will put the player). Also, it reduces the workload of the djtechtools staff and while having comparatively reduced running bandwidth costs as opposed to running it on site. I personally believe this is the best option so far, the time it would take to get running is also very minimal. - Thanks Corporation.
Stickam.com would allow us to be much more interactive with one another allowing video, audio, text live all at the same time. Which would be useful than just listening to controllerism sets, not really knowing what is going on in the mix. So it has my thumbs up
stickam.com does look pretty much perfect for now. we should go about setting something up. would be totally sweet.
Setting up a DJtt live radio stream (on itunes etc) could be awesome at some point if we actually organised people to do shows and was more structured like a traaditional radio station. Although this could take a whole lot more workâŚ
hi peops, i was very lazy with this cool thread here
but i didnt forget it ! but i promise to dig every single post. the idea is still cool, and will be cool in the future but my biggest problem is : i live in a nice house next to the woods, city is still reachable but some companys missed to connect this location to high speed internet, got 1000 dsl,but it only makes the half (500) upload max 9 kbps ,that disturbs my vision of mixing online ;( but that doesnt mean i m not after a solution.
like i said : i ll go through the posts ,try things out and âi ll be backâ
you people are so sweat, and so professional ,thanks for all the ideas
i dont know how well it would work, but I work for a video game company, and I am also a gamer --hence me being an all digital DJ..lolâŚanyhow I use a program called Teamspeak to talk to my friends on a headset while playing gamesâŚ
i know you can chat as well using teamspeak, and you can have multiple roomsâŚmaybe we can all pitch in to rent a serverâŚi think it is like 10 bucks max a month to get a server up and goingâŚ
so instead of streaming voice through your mic, maybe you can have your music go through your mic line?
heres some info
TeamSpeak is a quality, scalable application which enables people to speak with one another over the Internet. TeamSpeak consists of both client and server software. The server acts as a host to multiple client connections, capable of handling literally thousands of simultaneous users. This results in an Internet based conferencing solution that works in a variety of applications such as team mates speaking with one another while playing their favorite online game, small businesses cutting costs on long distance charges, or for personal communication with friends and family.
Among TeamSpeakâs incredible range of features are crystal clear voice communication, Windows/Linux cross-platform design for both the client and server (although a third party client for Mac OS X is also available), a built in web based administration control panel for the server, and a highly scalable user permissions system. In addition, the TeamSpeak server can spawn multiple instances or âvirtual serversâ from a single server session, thus easily facilitating âserver farmingâ. The server also has a native SQLite database but can be configured for use with MySQL, and has built in command line query capabilities via telnet, allowing practically limitless customization and integration options.
TeamSpeak is FREE of charge for non-commercial use, and has very low cost licensing fees for commercial use. If you own a web hosting company or you would like to apply to become an Authorized TeamSpeak Host Provider (ATHP) with unlimited earning potential, please contact us or visit our FAQ for more information on licensing and terms of use. If youâre new to TeamSpeak, please visit our Getting Started page for further information.
I know TS2, I used to be a frequent on UT99, and may be starting up with CoD1 again. Retro ftw!
Put aside, if you want to do b2b dj sets, it will still be tricky due to latencies/ping delays etc.
Not even talking about setting up a cue ring/MIDIsync clock.
I donât know how live mixing would work over the internet, If youâve ever used any sort of voice chat program youâll notice that there is around a 1 second delay for everyone. Because of that I think beatmatching and mixing in general would be incredibly hard. The person currently mixing would hear everything sooner than the people who are listening. This is a technical problem that we canât fix, because the speed of light is only so fast. (electrical signals go at the speed of light) This is of course excluding ISP problems and such. There are just so many things that could go wrong with this.
