I’m already super happy with my original Sony MDR-V700’s for DJ’ing (had 'em 10 years and still going strong!) - but they’re uncomfortable for extended studio sessions.
Looking to get a cheap pair of COMFY studio headphones to do the majority of my studio work on. I’ll stick to the Sony’s for DJ’ing, and maybe for doing final mixdowns. They sound fantastic.
I’m looking at these (just after a bargain pair of comfy can’s):
GENUINE SONY MDR-v300 DJ STEREO STUDIO MP3 HEADPHONES
£31.95 - quite like the look of these. Are they really genuine Sony’s, though?
[EDIT: I’ve read some reviews - sounds like these clamp on quite tight. No thanks].
Behringer HPS5000 Studio headphone
£33.40 - these look DOUBLE comfy…
[EDIT: I’ve read some interesting reviews on these. Sounds like you need to bend 'em about a bit to get 'em to fit nicely. Quite happy to do that. Another review said that these would only fit people with wide heads. Perfect.
[EDIT2: Arrived today - they are VERY uncomfortable. They clamp HARD. Sending 'em back].
Anybody tried any of these cans??? Right now the MDR-V150’s are way out in the lead…
They are over the ear headphones, which are the most comfortable. I’ve owned a set of HD280s for about 6 years now which I use for personal listening and doing some light work in Ableton Live on late nights. Longest I’ve had them on without taking them off was around 8 hours.
Looking for a cheap(ish) pair. Realise that sound quality will suffer - but the new cans are really only for arranging (where sound quality ain’t that important). The mix down will be done through my studio speakers (or the MDR-V700’s).
I have the MDR-150s. I’m wearing them right now. They are not comfortable… they hurt my ears after maybe 30 minutes of wear. This lasted for a good 3 weeks.
Recently however, I haven’t noticed really any discomfort, and it seems to have gone away. Maybe my ears got used to them?? haha. However, I wouldn’t buy them ever again!
Every studio i’ve ever been in (including my own) is outfitted with Sony 7506’s… they’re extremely comfortable for long sessions and more importantly, they sound great and are very durable. the industry standard studio cans. they’re a bit more pricey than the cans you’ve listed but certainly worth the money if you can afford them.
Based on a review at Amazon - where the reviewer said the sound was great, but more importantly, they could be bent about a bit to make 'em more comfortable.
Okay - they arrived today. They’re going straight back. Didn’t even plug 'em in to test the sound.
They clamp on your head HARD, and they’re made of plastic so if you try to bend 'em about a bit to make 'em more comfy, you’re gonna break 'em.
Back to square one. I’ll probably go for one of the Seinnheisers. COmfort is EVERYTHING for these headphones. Can any big headed mother-fuckers (and I don’t mean cocky) recommend a pair that are COMFY?
Here we go again.
It’s between the Sony MDR 7506’s and the Sennheiser HD 228/HD 238’s. I say again - it’s 100% comfort that I’m concerned with here.
Right - for anyone that’s interested, I’ve been out today and tried on a sh*t load of headphones. Found some pretty comfy ones - they were all Sennheisers.
The photo doesn’t do 'em justice. The shiny “wheel” detail on these is actually more of a dark, gunmetal grey than the garish silver that is shown above (guess that’s due to the flash on the camera?)
They were SUPER COMFY. The pads cover your ears completely, and are super soft. I tracked 'em down for £53, and placed the order just now.
I picked these over the HD 448’s (which are also comfy) based on the sound of them. To my ears, the sound was much more crisp through the 438’s.
I also tried on the HD 218’s, 228’s & 238’s. The 238’s are in a class of their own comfort wise. Don’t know if the extra cost over the 228’s is worth getting the 238’s… More suited to mp3 players - but would surely do the job that I was looking for them to do.
