nu disco - opinions?
Hi guys,
I’ve been discussing with a fellow dj about the merits of nu disco, what does everyone think?
also here is some disco and deep house for your listening pleasure
I play it some, basically on the principle that if it sounds good and I like it there must be others that will also want to hear it.
do you find some of it a bit slow for clubs? but not really warm up music?
There’s a whole ton of different clubs and nights out there. If you’re playing a dubstep night or if the club is known for techno then nu-disco isn’t what you want to play. However there’s ton’s of clubs out there where nu-disco works well.
It fits well in my deep house sets where I might want a different sound and type of beat structure. Again this largely depends on the song and nu-disco is a very broad category.
I mix it in with deep house/house. If it’s a bit slower I’ll speed it up within reason. Though some of it’s already pretty similar in bpm.
'bout time we did another one of these
That is a mighty fine mix, especially the end. ![]()
Love that mix. Pretty sweet song selection.
It’s my favorite genre of house music ever since I first laid my ears on Daft Punk’s Discovery.
I’ve been posting my favorite songs related to the genre here: http://www.discofilter.com/
If anyone else can recommend nu-disco music blogs, I’d be happy to check 'em out!
I’m not really sure I understand what constitutes this genre. Nonetheless I recently realized how much awesome music is categorized under “Indie Dance / Nu Disco” at Beatport. Was quite a revelation. Especially since I now like to play all my Deep/Tech House stuff at 118bpm rather than 125 like before.
Check out anything to do with Russ Chimes or Anoraak there both pretty great.
newest Russ Chimes…crazy.
Yeah a lot of the stuff in that category is great
Nu disco is kinda confusing. There is nu disco and ‘neu disco’- neu disco is french house and distinct from nu disco which is not house and is just nu disco, or something…
vs.
I think of it generally as using modern dance music production techniques with disco-oriented samples and synthesizers. It’s a pretty broad genre.
Well can anyone recommend me some stuff similar to what I posted above…like in comparison to Russ Chimes?
Cheers
Nice blog, thx!
Yes, just now it’s one of the few EDM styles that evolve rapidly (like dubstep), the french filter-nu disco turned into space disco, eighties style Chrome like productions and who knows next week. Lindstrom’s Six Cups of Rebel, don’t know even how to classify that album, progressive nu disco? Anyway, it’s a cool music style. Even better, those who work with this as producers are really good musicians/producers as it requires a good foundation in music theory such as chord structures similar to jazz music. Even better, strong melodic bass lines are back which me thinks is good.
Trouble with Beatport is that “Indie Dance” (whatever the hell that is) isn’t really Nu Disco, so a lot of the music in that category I wouldn’t play as it appears to be veering off into Electro House/Nu Rave territory. I find the Juno download Nu Disco section a lot more rewarding to peruse.
I would love to.
Lethal and Photojojo fancy it too?
i had a residency where i usually opened with nu disco. my work flow went like this:
nu disco>indie dance, french house type stuff (ducksauce go go bizkitt)
then the other resident would play according to our guest (we had everyone from Classixx, sammy bananas, to Le Castlevania).
people really dug the nu disco stuff. its great for slower nights, opening/warm up music, or if the crowd is a bit older it works well.
I typically play french disco nu-disco to funky tech house and it works great.
