Pioneer in final stages of selling DJ gear unit - Reuters.

Yeah. He personally fixed my Xone 62.

people sell of parts of their company for the immediate gains that tend to happen from doing so. they get some money and they cut the overhead. The stock tends to reflect positively on things like this and that stock gain is important. The market likes when companies to short term quick cash grabs even though it might not be the best business decision.

Exacly, there are a lot of reasons to do so, its much more complicated than “Pioneer is awesome, thats why they are selling it” like some guys here are defending.

You guys can like whatever you want, but don’t be so naive please.

Plus, its not being sold for BILLIONS, so this is not the case of a big well paid retirement for the owners…

then everything will require an apple device just to get running. and a legal copy of OSX

We never said they’re selling it because Pioneer is awesome… we are just refuting your claim that Pioneer is selling it just because it’s going bad for them.

I am pretty sure Pioneer makes a whole lot more money from their other holdings, and this could just be influenced by what is going on over on the automotive electronics side.

You can bash Rekordbox all you want, but if it was as bad as you made it out to be, you wouldn’t see pros using it. Within this forum alone, I’m willing to bet very few people have issues as well.

Pioneer know the American driven EDM boom isn’t going to last much longer. How many times can “Dmitri Vegas & Like Mike, Martin Garrix, David Guetta & DVBBS ft. Showtek & New World Sound Vs. Steve Aoki and Hardwell (Tiesto Remix)” release the same song before the nation finally realises; “Holy shit, every single one of these songs is exactly the same”.

I’ll tell you, not long. I give EDM two years tops. What comes next? Probably not electronic music. DJing will still be cheap, but who the fuck wants to be a DJ when Rock is finally cool again? Holy shit, Pioneer have started an instrument division! Pay £2000 for a £500 guitar! YEAH MAN PIONEER ARE INDUSTRY STANDARD GUITARS.

Thus is the cycle of fashionable music. Pioneer have their heads screwed on, they know it’s not going to get better so they’re getting out now. Anyone who buys it is taking a massive gamble on the longevity of this “Everyone’s a DJ” culture.

And when that culture ends my friends, oh my, it will be a beautiful day indeed. When people will look at us like geeks and outcasts, listening to our retro dance music, and not really “Playing the music” like all the trendy rock musicians are.

Glorious, glorious times ahead.

Of course, these are the ramblings of a mad man, so take from it what you will. Rainbow Pigeons.

Some people we’re pretty close as to why pioneer is being sold, others like the poster above me completely miss the mark. Pioneer acquisition doesn’t reflect anything of the culture of “edm” or the current market for hardware. The article stated everything anyone needs to know above, pioneer wants to focus it’s efforts into the car stereo market. It’s not a point of a declining market and such things, it’s just a billion dollar company finds that by not focusing on a lucrative market of car stereos by having resources tied up in then dj decision, it’s actually costing them money despite the fact that they’re making money. It’s a case of comparative advantage, if you want the technical term.

Pioneer dj devision is probably going to a group, company, hedge fund, whatever, that can fully focus all of their resources the most efficient way to show the most results, notably how to give its customers better products for less money with better service.

If he market was going to take a turn for the worst then it wouldn’t make sense to acquire a money pit.

Yes!

One thing can’t be denied: DJs don’t need Pioneer anymore, period.

Today you can play a beautiful set, with extremely good audio quality and nicely syncd tracks without a single piece of pioneer gear. Actually, without pioneer stuff, it may even have better quality and be better syncd!! (for sure will with Serato/Traktor)

So. Why would people keep buying Pioneer?

-“Because it’s quality stuff, things don’t break…”

But my laptop doesn’t breaks, my MIDI controller doesn’t breaks, my cables don’t break. And if any of this breaks will be just rare as a CDJ would. When you buy quality stuff like A&H, Apple, Oyaide, you get quality, it simple!

I’ve saw more broken CDJs than NI stuff actually!

Is Pioneer stuff so good? Or people have this in their heads because everybody keeps repeating it like crazy?

Now saying people buy Pioneer just because of its qualiy stuff is pure bullshit. Pioneer does spend A LOT with marketing and I’ve saw A LOT of people buying expensive CDJs because they THINK they are good, but had no experience at all to really know so.

Apple bought Beats? Ok. Is beats really good or people buy it because they are ignorant?

You may talk bad about Beats buyers but you may be just the same fool buying Pioneer. Think about it.

well, cdjs are popular because most night clubs and bars have those to use for their entertainment. All i have to do when i show up to a gig is bring my cd binder, a few usbs, and a set of headphones.

Its really comes down to convenience for me. I if i go to a gig where i have to bring my own stuff then i’ll bring out the z1 and a x1, but I’m not going to bring stuff to a crowded booth if I don’t have to.

your point is invalid. you can do the same with denon cdjs & mixer or as a matter of fact - any other usb/CD enabled player

Hm so CDJs are popular because clubs use them or clubs use them because they are popular?

Have you saw platinum CDJs & mixers… Do you think clubs or events that have those paid more for the platinum edition? Or they got it as a form of marketing?

Some Big DJs use Rekordbox, but they also make marketing of the software, tutorial videos & etc… They have a monetary relation with Pioneer don’t they…?

Some other Big DJs also use Apple, Traktor, Oyaide… Is Pioneer the only and absolute brand you can trust?

Convenience. Pioneer needs to be better at something right? But wouldn’t your set be more rich if you were using your laptop & z1/x1?
My sets got better after using Traktor, now I play more genres and mix them better than how I did with CDJs. Its easier to change the energy of the set, I mean, I have more tools, its natural that things are better and easier.

i didn’t specify what kind of cdjs, you just assumed i was implying pioneer cdjs.

Yes you can play a beautiful set without Pioneer, sure - but i doesn’t fit in a shirt pocket like a Rekordbox USB key.

I bet there are alot more venues using CDJ’s than NI controllers  - I’ve seen more broken Toyotas than Lamborghini’s does that make Lambo more reliable ?

Because its an Industry Standard Workflow as stated above, any DJ can walk into any venue, anywhere and everything works exactly the same in Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, New york etc …

Because they work, and continue working for years on end.

They might have a got a deal on them or they might have paid extra to have a glitzy DJ box, I’ve encountered both scenarios.

Only a very few have a monetary relation with Pioneer

Just because you play more genres and have more buttons doesn’t mean its better.

Maybe you just were not very good on CDJ’s ? It would certainly explain the pioneer hatred :stuck_out_tongue:

i never said pioneer made a better product. i actually own a z1 and an x1. all im saying is that cdjs have a place in the market because its pretty easy to operate a standard turntable and a mixer, thats why most clubs and bars have them as a staple in their booth.

if what you’re implying is that your sets will becomes more “rich” by using traktor then there is not a difference between the marketing on pioneer and the marketing on native instruments. pioneer glamourizes the use of their super expensive cd players with their advertising, and native instruments does the same. I’ve witnessed people slay it with a super simple controller, and i’ve also watched someone completely sink a party because they couldn’t get it together behind some cdjs.

this thread has lost any substance to talking about the actual business aspect to this acquisition, instead becoming a whining match of gear opinions.

Good to who ever acquired pioneer dj. I’m sure we’ll see some more great and interesting products from them in the future.

you gotta go with what’s in the club, as that’s what you’ll be playing on and knowing the gear is important.

with 1200s fading away there’s not really any other options out there.

Meh. People bring gigantic controllers because they want, I bring a Laptop and a K2. Ohhh my arm hurts so much…

True, but still CDJs break a lot more than the common sense supposes, am I wrong?

True, but there will always be an audio input, which works exactly the same in Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, New york etc … so laptops & controllers will also work anywhere.

So do Macbooks, A&H products, Oyaide cables… it’s the third time I say it.

True, so you are partially confirming what I said.

I know many, Avicii, Armin Van Buuren, Laidback Luke, Swedish House Mafia, James Zabiela, Carl Cox, Chuckie… do I need to list more?

True, but in my case it was, and it was only possible with Traktor.

hehehe I’ve used more Rekordbox than you’ve inhaled air

Silliness

I’ve worked in Dj equipment sales and computer sales and what I can tell you is that quality doesn’t always equate to profitable.

There are very little profit margins in brands like pioneer,a&h, Etc. It takes more to make them and you sell less of them because of their going price is higher. You could sell ten $200 mixers in the time it would to sell a nice pioneer, a&h, or Rane. Dealer price on those cheaper mixers were about 45% - 70% of the manufacturer advertising price. Whereas, dealer cost was about 90% of the MAP on quality mixers.

It’s really sad but true. Although a company making cheap products start to suffer from a bad reputation after a while.

BTW, I no longer do sales because of that.
