Probably not, especially for DJing. They are huge and really still don’t produce great low end compared to nicer monitors that are much smaller. Hearing them at guitar center a lot of the smaller monitors that were similarly priced from nicer brands had better low end reproduction. I think the 8" are perfect once you add a 10s subwoofer.
Hey thanks for the info. I was hoping to get a pair that has decent sub low bass without the need for a added sub. Since I’ll be moving these around a bit it would be a little too much to move a sub as well.
What brands did you like 10" wise that you have heard at GuitarCenter?
I wasn’t really looking at 10" monitors I was just curious and was very underwhelmed by the RP10-3s for what they are.
Always add a sub, the KRK subs aren’t big and the sound quality difference is huge. I just picked up my second KRK 10s sub (I got both of them for $200 on craigslist) so I have one for DJing and one for my studio since I hate using monitors without them.
It doesn’t matter if you have 15" woofers, it is still going to sound weak and empty on full range compared to smaller speakers with a subwoofer. No subwoofer means no sub bass.
I really don’t understand how people are ok without using a subwoofer for DJing and dance music. It just sounds really weak to me and I would rather DJ with computer speakers that have a subwoofer than most smaller affordable monitors without one.
Agreed 100%.
That’s part of the reason I can’t fathom using anything but home stereo component speakers for DJing. They crank a LOT louder than any studio monitors I’ve heard, and tend to color the sound a little depending on what kind of amp/receiver is used. I’ve always gotten more bang (and boom) for my buck with that stuff.
Granted, if space is a concern, component stereo stuff is probably not the best idea.
Well in my case I am used to my 10" Alesis studio monitor two’s (http://www.alesis.com/monitor2) that sound absolutely fantastic. I figured the 10" rokits would sound at least comparable.
as an aside… i have an 8" kef sub and 2 alesis m1 active 520s (5 “). I’m thinking of upgrading the alesis speakers to rokits, either the 6” ones or the 8". I feel with my current setup the mids are not strong enough.
But I’m wondering if I do this will it mean I don’t need a sub anymore? I assume the 8" sub will still sound bassier because a) it’s on the floor and b) the box design means it puts out more bass than a combined 8" monitor would.
Yes you will still want the sub with it. Even if it’s the same size as the woofer it still probably has a better frequency response and speakers on full range never sound as good as having dedicated subs. Just like how there is a huge difference between a 12" top and a 12" top with a 12" subwoofer (look at the QSC Ksub that has 12" drivers).
From what I have read and heard from many reputable reviews is that the KRK 6s plus a 10 inch KRK sub produces the most realistic sound.
I’m sure the 8’s are fine but with a 10" sub there is no real reason to get an 8" monitor.
So basically the ideal setup is krk 10" sub and 6" monitors…but if you have money to blow then got with the JBL 4326p monitors with JBL 4310sp sub…its what i did and I couldn’t imagine a better setup.
I also got my speaker setup for right around $600 which is about $1400 below retail
Heard the 8" Rokits once, but also heard lots of monitor speakers which sounded way better than those. Bought myself a pair of M-Audio CX8s, beautiful sound and much better quality than the Rokits imo.
And about the subs: I don’t really miss it. The CX8s can reach quite low frequencies, I only tend to miss sub bass at some drum&bass and industrial hardcore tracks, but for house it’s perfect already.
Yeah it’s a pretty sweet studio sub for the money and has great inputs and outputs/ a good built in crossover. On my studio setup I run balanced 1/4" TRS from a Komplete Audio 6 to the sub then XLRs from the sub to each Rokkit 8. Then on my DJ setup I just use all XLRs.
They make some bigger fancier 12" subs but I haven’t heard them and didn’t have that kind of money. The 10" is more than enough for me.
