S4 User MIDI Mapping Jog Wheels not working

S4 User MIDI Mapping Jog Wheels not working

Hi all,

I’m trying to help out another user who is adjusting a mapping for a Denon controller to include Deck C/D functionality and fast track seeking.

Somewhat in desperation to aid my own learning, I tried to use the S4 MIDI Mode to test my mapping instructions. However, I can’t get the S4 Jog Wheels to send MIDI commands as I expect!

When I press the jog wheels, the “button” style MIDI command is received normally, and I can see both in Controller Editor and in Traktor that the MIDI IN indicator flashes to indicate signal received. However, there is no such indication when I turn the jog wheels and Traktor will not Learn the MIDI signal.

So I tried manually entering the same channel as per the Controller Manager template, which indicates Channel 1 Number 2 for the TURN function of the Jog wheel.

Can someone please explain the S4 Jog Wheel MIDI more so I can understand what I’m doing wrong? The S4 Manual refers you to the Controller Editor manual - which does have information on the S4 in section 19.6.6 Assignments for Digital Encoders and the Like but I haven’t found more information on why the jog wheel messages aren’t being sent!

Hello,
I just tried, it works fine for me.
You’re sure your still on midi mode (the loop lenght displays “on” and not a loop value) right?
Set also your in and out ports to the s4 and not to ‘all ports’.
the command is not a fader either.
Apart from that, I have no clue for you.
Hope you’ll find the solution.

Does it works normally in native mode? You can use override mapping function for your testing.

Thanks for the replies!

I ended up getting it working after upgrading from Traktor 2.6.7 to 2.6.8 and installing the new version 1.6.2 in the process. There was a new issue after the upgrade - in that Controller Editor worked almost as expected (the MIDI OUT indicator flashes when moving knobs, rather than the MIDI IN as per the previous version) but I wasn’t able to get any MIDI commands received by Traktor. I had to open my OSX MIDI Perferences and use the “Rescan MIDI” function after noticing my S4 was shown as not connected. After this rescan, everything started to work as expected, including the jog wheels.

So the suggestion above to select the S4 and not the All Ports as the input wasn’t possible until I did the “Rescan MIDI” operation in the OSX MIDI Preferences, and may have been why this wasn’t working with the previous version of Traktor and Controller Manager.

But as a result of these suggestions, I pushed on and got this working - thanks so much!
