Skrillex made a surprise appearance this morning & I witnessed him do the unthinkable
He actually DJed an entire set. Like with CDJs and real CDs. No laptop, trigger finger or ableton in sight.
I like hating on him as much as the next guy and we’ve seen the videos of his fake knob twisting and then when he had to cancel a show because his laptop died on multiple occasions. Maybe making the DJmag top100 he figured it would be a good idea to actually learn how to DJ traditionally. I didn’t really enjoy an hour and a half of his stuff at least he’s actually making an effort to learn more traditional medium. I’m not saying it’s at all difficult or he deserves a medal or anything, at least he’s doing it and doesn’t feel above it like some people…
I don’t know if thats a good thing or a bad thing..?
He’s not “really a DJ” if he can beatmatch, hes a DJ if he DJ’s, no matter what the medium. But, my traditional background makes me feel that he should learn to DJ manually.
Whats his motive..? Does it matter..? Maybe he always could DJ and he just chose not to..? Does anyone know for sure..?
I’m confused. I have mixed feelings that i cannot reconcile. I’m trying really hard not to care but once you have seen the dead cat at the side of the road you just can’t help but look again.
What i am certain of is that im p*ssed that we have another bloody Skrillex thread.
Im just so tired of hearing about him, good or bad, positive or negative I just don’t care.

Because djing and Production are two completely different animals. Both take serious dedication. I think going from djing to producing is more natural than the other way round.
Because cdjs and a mixer can only be successfully operated by those few elite and that is why they are djs! That and getting all the bitches, laughing at noobs and to bask in the glory of hookers and blow.
So true, I remember trying to learn on POS Belt drive Numarks back in the pre CDJ1000 days…
As far as skrillex goes, I think I’ve seen him rather competently playing a Bass…If you can play an instrument with any real ability djing comes rather quickly (the beatmatching and key recognition stuff at least) it’s just a learned skill (like tying your laces or riding a bike, it’s much more difficult to learn) not an artistic talent like playing an instrument, the art’s in DJing is in the programming and reading crowds…
Haha! Also true, however hard people try to compare them they are certainly entirely different beasts that require different skills. For me, I find production much more challenging, yet also much more rewarding.
